UN condoled the death of 39 Indian nationals abducted by ISIS in Iraq; President, PM express grief over death of Indians

The United Nations today condoled the death of 39 Indian nationals abducted by ISIS in Iraq, saying the tragedy is yet another example of the barbarism and cruelty of the notorious terror outfit. Jan Kubis, the Secretary-General's Special Representative for Iraq extended his deepest sorrow and condolences to the families of the victims, as well as to the people and Government of India.
Led by its elusive leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, ISIS had seized a third of Iraq's territory in 2014, before being pushed back by the security forces backed by a US-led coalition. They are accused of mass killings of innocent civilians including many foreigners.

President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi today expressed grief over the killing of 39 Indian workers in Iraq and said all Indians stand by the bereaved families of Mosul victims.

In a tweet, Mr Kovind said, he is extremely sad to learn of the tragic end of Indian citizens in Iraq. The President appreciated efforts of government and the officials, who worked hard to take the sad episode to a conclusion over the past four years.

The Prime Minister in a tweet said the Government remains fully committed to ensuring the safety of our sisters and brothers overseas.

Mr Modi said, the Ministry of External Affairs and particularly, Mrs Swaraj and Minister of State for External Affairs General V K Singh left no stone unturned in trying to trace and safely bring back those we lost in Mosul.
