PM Modi says India will continue to work with Nepal for its socio-economic development

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said, India will continue to work with Nepal for its socio-economic development. In a joint media briefing after holding delegation-level talks with Prime Minister of Nepal K P Sharma Oli in New Delhi, Mr Modi said, there is a long history of India's contribution in Nepal's development and it will continue in future.

He said, India would like to improve waterways and rail connectivity with Nepal and it has agreed to work towards a new railway line to connect Kathmandu. The Prime Minister said, both sides will further expand their cooperation in the field of agriculture. Mr Modi said, both sides have agreed that they will not allow their open borders to be misused.

In his address, Mr KP Sharma Oli said, Nepal attaches great importance to its relationship with India. He said, being close neighbours, prosperity is the common goal of both the countries. Mr Oli said, infrastructure and connectivity are vital for development of both sides. Mr Oli congratulated Prime Minister Modi for the incredible progress that India has made in last two decades.

Earlier, both the leaders jointly inaugurated the Integrated Check Post (ICP) Birgunj from the national capital through remote control. The ICP will not only reduce time in completing formalities at border but also ease and boost bilateral trade.

It will also facilitate integrated customs and immigration for smooth cross-border movement of people and goods. Equipped with state of the art infrastructure, ICP Birgunj in Parsa district of Nepal has been constructed with India's assistance. Birgunj is known as Gateway to Nepal and more than 60 percent trade of Nepal is done via Birgunj.

In the morning, Mr Oli was accorded a ceremonial reception at the forecourts of the Rashtrapati Bhawan. On the occasion, Mr Oli said friendship is most important and there is no comparison with friendship and any treaty any agreement, everything starts from friendship. He said with neighbours, particularly with India, Nepal first expect friendship.

Mr Oli also called on President Ram Nath Kovind at Rashtrapati Bhavan. During the meeting with the visiting dignitary, Mr Kovind said India values its economic and development partnership with Nepal. The President said, India stands ready to expand cooperation with Nepal as per Nepal’s priorities.

He said, India believes that enhanced connectivity between these two countries will boost economic growth and benefit the citizens. Mr Kovind said, regular exchanges of visits at the highest political level between the two countries demonstrate the priority that they attach to their special partnership.

He said, India abiding interest is in the stability and economic prosperity of Nepal. Mr Oli will also meet Vice President Venkaiah Naidu and Home Minister Rajnath Singh.
