CBI questions former Deputy Governor of RBI, Harun Rashid Khan in connection with PNB scam case
The Central Bureau of Investigation, CBI, has questioned former deputy governor of Reserve Bank of India - Harun Rashid Khan in its probe into the PNB scam case.
Mr Khan is the senior-most former official of the RBI to be questioned by the CBI in connection with bank scams involving jewellers Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi and relaxation of gold import rules in 2014 by the erstwhile UPA government allegedly to the benefit of private traders.
His questioning revolved around the policy framework of the time when fraudulent Letters of Undertaking were issued by PNB to the firms of Modi and Choksi.
Khan was also asked about 20:80 gold import scheme introduced by then finance minister P Chidambaram on 13th May 2014, barely three days before the counting of votes of 2014 general election. The scheme had allegedly helped Choksi's company and a few other make windfall gains.
Earlier, CBI had questioned three Chief General Managers and one General Manager of RBI in connection with the case. The questioning of Mr Khan was a continuation of the examination of other RBI employees.
After questioning the PNB top brass, the agency has now shifted its focus to the policies which could have been exploited by Modi and Choksi to further their alleged cheating.
