13 school children killed after train hits van in UP's Kushinagar

In Uttar Pradesh, 13 children were killed after a school van collided with a train at an unmanned crossing in Kushinagar district this morning. 

The accident took place at Bahpurwa village around 6:50 AM. Chief Medical Officer of the district Akhilesh Kumar told AIR that the condition of the four injured children and the driver of the van is serious. 

They have been shifted to the BRD medical college, Gorakhpur.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has ordered lodging of FIR in connection with the accident. After visiting the accident site and meeting the family members of the deceased students, Mr Adityanath said, prima facie negligence of the van driver was responsible for the accident. He said, divisional commissioner Anil Kumar has been asked to probe the accident. 

The Railways has also ordered a senior level enquiry. Briefing media in New Delhi, Railway Board Chairman Ashwani Lohani said, an enquiry has been ordered which will reveal what had happened. He said, there was visibility of 800 metres and the driver should have seen the train coming. 

The Chairman also said, there was rail mitra who tried to stop the van but the driver did not listen. He added, the Railways is hugely concerned about unmanned crossings and it is working on their total elimination. Mr Lohani said, all the unmanned crossings will be eliminated by 31st March, 2020.

Railway Minister Piyush Goyal and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath have announced two-two lakh rupees each to the next of the kin of those killed in the accident. The Railway Minister has announced one lakh rupees for the seriously injured, and 50,000 for those with minor injuries.

President Ram Nath Kovind, Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have expressed grief over the death of children in the accident. In a tweet, Mr Kovind said, his thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved families and with those injured.  

The Vice President also expressed his heartfelt condolences to the families of those killed and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.

Mr Modi said, the Railways and the Uttar Pradesh government will take appropriate action in this regard.
