PM Modi meets newly-elected Malaysian counterpart Mahathir Mohammad

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met his newly-elected Malaysian counterpart Mahathir Mohammad at his office in Putrajaya today.

The two leaders had a productive exchange of views on strengthening the strategic partnership. The two leaders also discussed ways to boost economic and cultural relations between India and Malaysia. In a tweet, External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said. Mr Modi congratulated Dr. Mahathir on assuming the post of Prime Minister of Malaysia.

Kumar said Malaysia is a strategic partner and a priority country in India's Act East Policy. In a tweet, Mr Modi thanked Dr. Mahathir for the warm welcome and said they had productive discussions on further cementing India-Malaysia ties.

Mr Modi arrived in Kuala Lumpur this morning on the second leg of his three-nation tour. During his brief stopover, Mr Modi also met with Deputy Prime Minister Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail and her husband Anwar Ibrahim.

Ninety-two-year-old Mahathir was sworn in as Malaysia's prime minister on May 10 after leading the opposition alliance to a stunning election victory over the Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition, which had ruled Malaysia since 1957.

From Kuala Lumpur, Mr Modi has left for Singapore where he will deliver a keynote address at the Shangri-La Dialogue, an annual security meet, tomorrow.
