Railway Minister Piyush Goyal inspects bridge collapse site in Mumbai

Railway Minister Piyush Goyal inspected the bridge collapse site at Andheri railway station in Mumbai where a road over bridge collapsed this morning due to heavy rains. Five persons were injured in the incident. 

The Minister announced a compensation of one lakh rupees to the injured apart from medical expenses which the railways will bear. 

He also announced a cash reward of five lakh rupees for motorman Chadrashekhar Sawant, who swiftly applied emergency brakes and averted a major accident.

Mr. Goyal told reporters that an inquiry has been ordered into the incident:

The railway minister added that a joint safety audit of all the 445 bridges on Mumbai’s suburban route will be conducted by railways, Mumbai civic body and IIT, Mumbai in the next six months and any necessary design or construction repair will be carried out as recommended.
