141 people killed in rain-hit western Japan, highest toll in 36 years

In Japan, 141 people have been killed and 63 others missing in floods and landslides triggered by torrential rain in western part of the country.

Officials said, it is the highest death toll caused by rainfall that Japan has witnessed in 36 years. About two million people have been evacuated from the region after rivers burst their banks. 

Rescuers are digging through mud and rubble in a race to find survivors. Heavy rain began with a typhoon last week that was followed by days of record-breaking torrential rain.
