Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been awarded with the prestigious United Nations Champions of the Earth Award. UN Environment has announced that Mr Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron have been awarded in the Policy Leadership category, for their efforts regarding their International Solar Alliance. The award also recognises the efforts for promoting new areas of co-operation on environmental action. This includes Mr Modi's unprecedented pledge to eliminate all single-use plastic in India by 2022.

Founded thirteen years ago, the annual Champions of the Earth prize is awarded to outstanding leaders from government, civil society and the private sector whose actions have had a positive impact on environment.
