ISA can replace OPEC in future as key supplier of energy for world: PM Modi

PTI
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that International Solar Alliance (ISA) can replace Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) in the future as key supplier of energy for the world.

Inaugurating the first Assembly of the ISA in New Delhi yesterday evening, Mr Modi said, in future, the the group of solar resource rich nations will have the same role that is being played by OPEC currently.

Prime Minister said, the role being played by oil wells now will be palyed by rays of the sun in future. Mr Modi called for connecting solar energy supply across borders and mooted the idea of  'One World One Sun One Grid'.

Prime Minister said, humans have in the last 150-200 years relied on resources trapped below the earth's surface for meeting energy needs. But for a secure future, resources available above the ground like solar and wind energy need to be harnessed, he said.

Prime Minister said, India will generate 40 per cent of power from non-fossil fuels by 2030. Mr Modi was of the view that this is the right time to invest in renewable energy because there is a possibility of 70-80 billion dollar business in the next four years in India. Prime Minister said in the last four years 42 billion dollars have been invested in clean energy in India.

Speaking on the occasion, UN Secretary-General Antnio Guterres said, It is India where we are going to see global renewable energy revolution. and solar energy is at the centre of this revolution.

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is a person who has single-handedly put India in the renewable map of the world.
