NGT panel conducts hearing on environmental degradation due to Sterlite Copper unit in Tuticorin

The Justice Tarun Aggarwal panel instituted by the National Green Tribunal to look into the charges of environmental degradation due to the Sterlite Copper units in Tuticorin had a public hearing in Chennai today. 
 
The panel received representations from the public on the issue in Tuticorin recently, and its Chennai meet comes as a sequel to it. The main opposition party in Tamil Nadu, the DMK, gave a representation saying, the copper smelting unit at Tuticorin is causing serious harm to the health of the local public. 
 
The actor-turned politician Kamal Hassan’s Makkal Neethi Mayyam, traders associations and many others gave representations against the unit, while a few others supported the continuance of the units.
