EU & US urge political parties in Sri Lanka to follow Constitution and refrain from violence

The European Union, US and UK have urged political parties in Sri Lanka to follow the Constitution and refrain from violence. The EU delegation, in a statement, urged Sri Lankan parties  to follow due institutional process and respect freedom of media. 


The statement said, the Ambassador of the EU as well as those of France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Romania and UK, are closely following the events as they are unfolding in the island nation.


The US State Department said its expects government of Sri Lanka to uphold its Geneva commitments to human rights, reform, accountability, justice, and reconciliation.


Meanwhile, Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena is scheduled address the nation today amidst political turmoil in the wake of swearing-in of Mahinda Rajapakse as new Prime minister. He is to brief the nation on the circumstances that led to his decision to sack Ranil Wickremesinghe as Prime Minister.
