The United States has granted Iraq a waiver to allow it to keep importing electricity from neighbouring Iran despite renewed American sanctions on Tehran.

US State Department's representative on Iran, Brian Hook said that Iraq had been granted a special permission.

He told reporters in Washington yesterday that the US granted Iraq a waiver to allow it to continue to pay for its electricity imports from Iran.

An Iraqi source said, the US gave Baghdad 45 days to plan on how Iraq will gradually stop using Iranian gas and oil. Baghdad relies heavily on Tehran to provide it natural gas and Iranian-generated electricity.
