The Supreme Court today stayed the Meghalaya high court order directing private airlines to begin flight operations immediately from Umroi airport in the state. The High court earlier directed commercial airlines including Indigo and Spicejet to begin flight operations with immediate effect.

A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi took note of the submissions by Indigo airlines that there are no firefighting and other facilities available at the airport, thus making it difficult to operate flights immediately.

The apex court yesterday agreed to hear the plea of private airlines challenging the high court order. Umroi Airport is located 30 kilometres from state capital Shillong.
