Opposition continues to stall proceedings in Parliament

Lok Sabha was adjourned for the day on Friday due to ruckus by the Opposition. 

As the House met again at noon after its first adjournment, Congress members shouted slogans on Rafale aircraft deal. 

AIADMK members were up against Central Water Commission’s permission to Karnataka for preparing a Detailed Project Report on Mekedatu Reservoir across River Cauvery. 

In the midst of acrimonious scenes, Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Arjun Ram Meghwal informed the Chair, most members have sought declaring holidays on 24th and 26th December in view of Christmas. 

After taking the sense of the House, Speaker Sumitra Mahajan acceded to the demand. 

As pandemonium continued, she adjourned the House, till Thursday the 27th. Earlier, when the House met for the day, the Chair was forced to adjourn it till noon, due to sloganeering by the opposition over their demands.

The Rajya Sabha was adjourned for the day today due to Opposition uproar over the government’s order authorising intelligence agencies to intercept information stored on computers.

When the House re-assembled after lunch to take up private members’ business, Leader of the Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad took serious objection to the Home Ministry’s order, saying it tantamounts to an undeclared emergency in the country.

He alleged that the government has encroached upon privacy of citizens by issuing such an order. The issue led to a heated exchange of words between Treasury and Opposition benches.

Responding to Mr Azad’s allegations, Leader of the House and Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said the order has been issued keeping in view threats to national security, public order and the country’s integrity.

He stated the government notified the executive order which was first issued by the UPA government in 2009.

Mr Jaitley was joined by fellow colleague and IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad who allayed apprehensions of its misuse. As pandemonium continued, Deputy Chairman Harivansh adjourned the House till 27th of this month.
According a Home Minister order yesterday, security and intelligence agencies have been authorised to intercept, monitor and decrypt any information generated, transmitted, received or stored in any computer resource under the IT Act. The agencies include the Intelligence Bureau, the Enforcement Directorate and the CBI.
AIR correspondent reports, the Upper House had faced an adjournment in the pre-lunch session following uproar over Rafale aircraft deal issue.

Congress MP Anand Sharma said his party is ready for a discussion on Rafale but government should first accept its demand for a JPC probe into the deal. He was countered by Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Vijay Goel who assured that the government is ready to hold a discussion on Rafale and other important issue at any point in time. Meanwhile, AIADMK and DMK members rushed to the well with placards in support of their demand for a permanent solution to river Cauvery issue.

It was for the ninth day today that Rajya Sabha failed to transact any legislative business due to repeated disruptions.
