Bolton says US withdrawal from Syria is conditional

NSD Logo
White House has said US will not withdraw troops from Syria unless Turkey offers a firm commitment not to target US allies in Syria. National security adviser John Bolton said that he would seek Turkish assurances that Kurds in northern Syria would be safe. He added that the US also wants to ensure that the remnants of the Islamic State group are defeated.

President Donald Trump has faced strong criticism over the planned US pullout. The announcement has shocked America's Kurdish allies in Syria as they have been left feeling exposed to Turkey, which regards them as terrorists.

Initially, Trump had said the US is going to immediately remove its troops from Syria. Later, the US officials said American forces had been given 30 days to leave Syria and that they would be fighting to remain IS militants.
