India to fully operationalise Chabahar port soon, says Gadkari

India is hopeful of the complete operationalisation of the Chabahar Port in the Sistan-Balochistan province of Iran soon.

Iran Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, who reached India on Monday, met Road, Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari in New Delhi on Tuesday.

Talking to media after the meeting, Mr Gadkari said, he and Mr Zarif had a good discussion with regard to the Chabahar Port and the two countries are working very hard on its operationalisation as it is very important for both the nations.

Mr Gadkari said a lot of other proposals were also discussed with his Iranian counterpart.

Mr Gadkari said, he had a very productive meeting with Mr Zarif. After meeting Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, Mr Zarif said India can look at investments in sectors like petrochemicals and fertilisers in the Chabahar area.

The Iranian Foreign Minister Zarif also attended India-Iran Business Seminar along with Minister of State for External Affairs V K Singh.

Mr Singh urged business communities at the India-Iran Business Seminar to enhance and diversify trade and economic cooperation. He said, initiatives for connectivity- Chabahar and International North-South Transport Corridor are important for landlocked economies of Afghanistan and Central Asia.

Iran Foreign Minister hoped that India will seek another waiver from US sanctions to continue buying its crude oil, noting that it is the world's fastest-growing major economy's most reliable energy provider.

India in November last year won a six-month waiver to buy crude oil from Iran after it agreed to cut imports and escrow rupee payments.
