23 poets, representing all 22 languages in the Ninth Schedule of the Indian Constitution are participating in the symposium.

Inaugurating the Sarva Bhasha Kavi Sammelan, Tamil Nadu Governor Bunwarilal Purohit said poems enlighten hearts and minds, apart from helping in contributing to national integration and linguistic harmony.

The Director General of All India Radio, Mr Fayyaz Sheryar recalled the glorious tradition of the Kavi Sammelan. He noted that this is the first time the event is being held in Chennai.

The special programme based on the event is to be aired by the public service broadcaster AIR, on the eve of the Republic Day, the 25th of this month.
