In Japan, nine companies, including drugmakers and a newspaper, have received blackmail letters containing white powder suspected to be cyanide.

Police said the letters were sent under the names of executed members of the Aum Shinrikyo, the Japanese doomsday cult behind the deadly 1995 sarin gas attack in Tokyo.

The sender has demanded 35 million won, approx 31,000 dollars, in virtual currency- bitcoins.

The letter said, if money was not transfered by 22nd February, they will start making fake medicine containing highly toxic potassium cyanide and distribute it, which may lead to a tragedy.

As per a local media reports, Similar threatening letters were sent to some pharmaceutical companies in Osaka in January last year.
