Assam: State EC takes up initiatives to maximise voters' participation

In Assam the state election commission has taken up initiatives to maximise participation of first time voters, people with physical disabilities, senior citizens and female voters in the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls.

 Folk song competitions, quiz programmes, cycle rallies, street plays and appeals by celebrities are some of the initiatives taken up by the Election department. While, sprinter Hima Das who herself is a first time voter, urges young voters to actively participate in a promotional video, singer Tarali Sarma, has sung the theme song to drum up awareness among the voters.

Whitley Awardee and environmentalist Purnima Devi Barman, bodybuilder Golap Rabha and actor Kopil Bora have also been roped in to create awareness about the electoral process.

  A woman mascot, 'Chandraprabha', will be used for spreading the message of electoral participation in the local langugae. Chief Electoral Officer, Mukesh Sahu said Polling stations with low female voter turnout have been identified and 'mahila voter rallies' are being held in these areas. The district authorities have also been directed to compile a list of persons with disabilities and directed that voters with severe locomotor disabilities, must be provided pick up and drop facilities.
         Polling in Assam will be held in the first three phases on April 11, 18 and 23.
