India emerging as big player in commercial satellite launches, says ISRO

Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) has said that the nation is emerging as a big player in commercial satellite launches.

Rakesh Sasibhushan, chief of the agency’s commercial wing called Antrix Corporation, said that India has a very sound space pedigree and has launched more than 300 satellites from Indian soil.

Many of them were from foreign countries, Mr Sasibhushan said while speaking at a CII seminar in Chennai yesterday. He said India is ideally positioned in garnering the large growth in global space domain. He said that space sector startups are booming, auguring well for its growth.

Mr Sasibhusan said a whole new business model is evolving in space where small satellite constellations will replace the larger big satellites of previous era.

He said the global space industry is currently valued at 350 billion US dollars and added that the figure is expected to touch 1.9-trillion dollars by 2040. He noted that the growth will open up a world of opportunities for India.
