EC concludes review of poll preparedness in Tamil Nadu

DD News
The Election Commission of India, ECI, has said, it is committed to holding free, fair, inclusive and peaceful elections. It has directed all State and District Level Election Machinery to be fearless, objective, neutral and independent from any influence.

Election Commissioners Ashok Lavasa and Sushil Chandra accompanied by senior officials of the Commission concluded their review of election preparedness in Tamil Nadu at Chennai on Thursday.

They met representatives of recognized political parties, district election officers and superintendents of police on Wednesday. They held discussion on Thursday with the state Chief Secretary, DGP and heads of various departments, including Income Tax and Excise, about prevailing situation in run-up to polling on 18th April.

In the meetings, the Commissioners insisted that the ECI has zero-tolerance for any willful negligence or proven mala fide by poll-related officials.

They assured that the ECI would stand by officers even after the polls if they are victimised for acting in the interest of free and fair elections.

Later, addressing news-persons, Mr Lavasa said, the Commission has been given a lot of feedback about abuse of money power in the state. He said officials have been asked to intensify their vigil on cash distribution. He said Central Armed Police Forces will be deployed in adequate numbers wherever required.

The Election Commissioner said all the poll-bound 39 Parliamentary Constituencies and 18 Assembly Constituencies would be covered under ‘Electronically Transmitted Postal Ballot System’ to facilitate the Service Voters.
