Opposition accuses EC of not doing enough to address EVM malfunctioning issue

Opposition parties on Sunday alleged that Election Commission is not doing enough to address the issue of EVM malfunctioning during the polls. 

At a joint press conference following opposition parties meeting in New Delhi, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu said the impartiality of the Election Commission is at stake. Mr Naidu demanded that fifty per cent of the VVPAT should be counted. 

The Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister said, opposition parties have come together to raise the issue to protect democratic spirit in the country.

Corroborating Mr Naidu's views, Congress leader Abhishek Singhvi, said many questions were raised after the first phase of Lok Sabha elections on EVMs. 

He also said that the names of lakhs of voters are d online without physical verification. He said, opposition parties will approach the Supreme Court and carry out a nationwide campaign on the issue of alleged discrepancies in EVMs.

CPI General Secretary Sudhakar Reddy, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, CPI(M) leader Nilotpal Basu, leaders from JD(S), Samajwadi party were also present. 


BJP spokesperson G V L Narasimha said, while sensing their defeat in the Lok Sabha polls, opposition parties are making baseless charges and questioning the poll panel.
