Madras HC Bench stays Centre's notification on acquiring land for laying gas pipeline

The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has stayed the Centre's notification on acquiring land for laying gas pipeline from Ramanathapuram to Tuticorin.

A Public Interest Litigation has been filed before the court against the project saying the proposed pipeline passes through a ten km stretch of a bird sanctuary and other ecologically sensitive tracts. It said the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board has given permission only to the route from Madurai to Tuticorin, and added that the Ramanathapuram-Tuticorin route does not have its approval.

After hearing the petition, the Division Bench consisting of Justices Dhandapani and Nisha Bhanu stayed the Centre's notification and directed to issue notices to the Union Ministries of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Environment and the regulatory board.
