US slaps sanctions against Myanmar military chief, three others for Rohingya killings

@SecPompeo
The United States has slapped sanctions against Myanmar's Chief of Military and three other top officers for gross human rights violations, including killing of Rohingya Muslims.

Following the sanctions, Army Chief Min Aung Hlaing and the others along with their immediate family members have been banned from entering the United States.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the US is the first government to publicly take action with respect to the most senior leadership of the Burmese military.

He also said, the ethnic cleansing of Rohingyas is an example of the continued and severe lack of accountability for the military and its top leadership.

The State Department said, it took action against Army Chief and the others after finding credible evidence they were involved in the violence two years ago that led about 7 lakh 40,000 Rohingyas to flee across the border to Bangladesh.

The US had last year designated two other generals Lieutenant General Aung Kyaw Zaw and General Maung Maung Soe.
