In the 2016 South Asian Games hosted by India, Bangladesh had attained the fifth position with four gold, fifteen silver and 56 bronze medals. The four gold medals included two in swimming, one in weightlifting and one in shooting.

Swimmer Mahfuza Khatun Shila, who won two gold medals in the last South Asian Games at Guwahati in 2016, is leading the Bangladeshi contingent in the opening ceremony.

State Minister for Youth and Sports Zahid Ahsan Russel of Bangladesh on Thursday announced an award of Tk 6 lakh for each athlete winning gold medal at the 13th South Asian games at Nepal. Silver medalists will get Tk 3 lakh while bronze medalist will be awarded Tk 1 lakh by the government of Bangladesh.
