No decision to sign MCC agreement with US, Sri Lankan govt informs SC

AIR
Sri Lankan government today informed the Supreme Court that there is no decision to sign the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) agreement with US and it is set to be reviewed.

The stance was made clear during hearing on a Fundamental Rights (FR) petition filed against the signing of the agreement and seeking an order declaring that the decision taken by the previous government to ink the deal is in violation of the Constitution.

Speaking on behalf of the government, the Attorney General office informed the five-judge judge bench of the government’s decision not to take any steps to reach the agreement until the review is completed.

Following the submission, the next hearing has been deferred till the 25th of March next year.

The petitioners claim that the MCC agreement could seriously harm the national security and sovereignty of the country.

MCC entitles Sri Lanka to receive 480 million US dollars grant from US government for development of transport and land sectors in Sri Lanka in lieu of certain reforms.

The former government had approved the agreement but had to suspend it following protests.
