The government today increased to the fair and remunerative price, FRP, of  sugarcane by 20 rupees per quintal to 275 rupees for the next marketing year starting October. The decision was taken at a Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi. Briefing reporters after the Cabinet meeting, Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approved the FRP for 2018-19 sugar season payable by sugar mills at 275 rupees per quintal for a basic recovery rate of 10 per cent for sugar.


Mr Prasad said, the total remittance to the sugarcane farmers will be more than 83000 crore rupees keeping the expected production of sugarcane in the sugar season 2018-19.

The Cabinet has approved special package for irrigation projects in Vidarbha, Marathwada and other chronically drought prone areas of the rest of Maharashtra. The package is for completion of 83 minor irrigation projects and 8 major and medium irrigation projects.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, CCEA, has approved proposal for continuation of Pre-Matric, Post Matric and Merit-cum-Means based Scholarship Schemes for the students belonging to the Minority Communities during 2017-18 to 2019-20. Mr. Prasad said, the schemes, at a total cost of over 5338 crore rupees, will be implemented through the National Scholarship Portal.

The Rajya Sabha has passed  the State Banks (Repeal and Amendment) Bill,2017 . The House adopted the amendment moved by the government regarding the bill. The Bill seeks to repeal the State Bank of India (Subsidiary Banks) Act, 1959, the State Bank of Hyderabad Act, 1956 and further to amend the State Bank of India Act, 1955. Under it, the five associate banks that were merged are State Bank of Bikaner and Jaipur, State Bank of Hyderabad, State Bank of Mysore, State Bank of Patiala  and State Bank of Travancore. The merger of these banks have already been effective from 1st April, 2017.


Replying to debate on the bill, Minister of State for Finance, Shiv Pratap Shukla said, the merger of these banks into SBI will enhance profitability, provide better customer service. The merger will bring about increased capital base and increased ability to give loans. He said the decision of merger has been taken after approval of board of directors of these five banks and RBI. Mr Shukla said, post merger every employee of these banks has been retained.


Initiating the discussion, Jairam Ramesh of Congress stressed on the need for strengthening the banking system in  the country and accountability in banks should be improved.


Members from other political parties including TMC, AIADMK and CPI took part in the discussion.

The Rajya Sabha has passed the Requisitioning and Acquisition of Immovable Property (Amendment) Bill, 2017. The House also adopted the amendment moved by the government regarding the bill. Replying to a discussion on the bill, Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs Hardeep Singh Puri said, the  bill specifically deals with acquisition of land for national security and defence purposes.

Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan today admitted the No Confidence Motion moved by the Opposition on the opening day of the Monsoon session of Parliament. The motion will be taken up for discussion on Friday. Seven hours have been alloted for the discussion, and voting will be held on the same day.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananth Kumar today said, NDA will unitedly vote against the No Confidence Motion brought by opposition led by TDP. Briefing media in New Delhi, Mr Kumar said, NDA will get the support more than expected.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said, the government is ready for discussion on all issues in the Monsoon session of Parliament. Talking to media outside Parliament, Mr Modi said government expects all political parties to co-operate and let the session function smoothly.

The Lok Sabha today passed The Right of children to free and compulsory education (second amendment) bill 2017. The bill authorizes the state governments to decide on holding regular examination for class 5th and 8th. The amendment seeks revocation of 'no detention' policy in classes 5 and 8. Replying to debate on the Bill, Human Resources Development Minister Prakash Javadekar said, Centre will give detail guidelines on the law. He said, there is no plan to remove children from schools and they will take re examination.

Finance Minister Piyush Goyal today introduced the Fugitive Economic Offenders Bill, 2018 in Lok Sabha. The bill has been brought in to help the government in confiscating properties of economic offenders who have absconded the country to avoid prosecution. Introducing the Bill, Mr Goyal said, offences involving amounts of 100 crore or more will fall under the purview of this bill.

The Assam police has arrested 19 state civil service officers today for their alleged involvement in the cash for job scam under Assam Public Service Commission. Among them, 13 are Assam Civil Service, 3 Assam Police Service and one District Transport Officer. Police had summoned all of them today to appear for a handwriting test. So far, police have arrested 54 officers for their alleged involvement in the scam.

In Uttar Pradesh, five bodies have been recovered from debris of the under construction buildings that collapsed at Greater NOIDA in Gautam Buddha Nagar. Four of the victims are male and one female.


Four people, including the builder and the owner of the land, have been arrested in connection with the tragedy. An FIR has been lodged under various sections of the IPC. 


Our correspondent reports that rescue and relief operations are underway by the NDRF. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has directed for a probe into the incident.

Heavy rain and floods continue to affect normal life in parts of Gujarat. State Relief Director and Additional Secretary Manoj Kothari said, 30 people have, so far, lost their lives in South Gujarat and Saurashtra. A total of 113 villages are still without power, and a number of roads, including two national highways and 12 state highways, are closed due to heavy rain. We spoke to NDRF PRO of sixth battalion Mr. Ranbir Mishra over relief and rescue operations:


" 16 teams are deployed in all over Gujarat 8 teams in Saurastra region and four in south Gujarat and four other places. And we have distributed 2850 relief materials food packets and some blankets and we have conducted medical camps also most of the evacuations was carried out in Saurastra region give Somnath region but situation is now under control".

In Kerala, incessant rain has thrown life out of gear with floodwaters submerging many areas, especially in the coastal districts. Four more people died today in various rain-related incidents. As per reports, nearly 34,000 people have been shifted to relief camps as the flood water has not yet receded in several places.

The Central Government is committed to doubling farmer’s income by 2020. To achieve this ambitious objective, the Government encourages to adopt the multidimensional strategy  which includes; Emphasis on irrigation, provision of quality seeds and nutrients, the introduction of Crop Insurance scheme and finally promotion of allied activities such as Dairy, Animal husbandry, Poultry, Horticulture, and Fisheries.


The Union Government has rolled out a good number of new initiatives like Soil Health Card Scheme, Neem Coated Urea, Paramparagat  Krishi Vikas Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana, National Agriculture Market (e-NAM) , Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana and so on.

India lives in villages and villages are basic source for generating agricultural income. Centre and State governments paid attention and worked out farmer friendly policies aiming at doubling the income of farmers."


The Govt has also launched a Mobile app crop insurance which will help farmers to find out complete details about insurance cover available in their area and details about insurance premium for notified crops. The BSE Sensex tumbled from its all-time high to end 147 points lower at 36,373 in choppy trade today. The Nifty fell 28 points to 10,980. The rupee today weakened 17 paise to close at 68 rupees 62 paise against the US dollar. Gold prices today tumbled by 250 rupees to trade at over five-month low of 30,800 rupees per 10 grams. The BCCI today named young wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant  in the 18-member Indian squad for the first three Tests against England. 20-year-old Pant has been named as the specialist wicketkeeper-batsman alongside Dinesh Karthik. Regular wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha continues to be out nursing a thumb injury sustained during the IPL earlier this year. Mohammad Shami, Jasprit Bumrah,Ishant Sharma, Umesh Yadav and Shardul Thakur constitute the pace department. However, there is uncertainly over the participation of key pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar in the five-match series after he aggravated a lower back condition during the third ODI against England yesterday.
