Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lay the foundationstone of India International Convention and Expo Centre (IICC) at Dwarka in NewDelhi this evening. According to an official release, the facilities providedat the centre will be on par with the best in the world in size and quality, offeringsetting for international and national events, meetings, conferences,exhibitions and trade shows. Later the Prime Minister will also address thegathering at the foundation ceremony. Our correspondent has the details.

 

"The IICC will be anintegrated complex with facilities like exhibition halls, retail services andhigh-end offices. It will rank among the top 10 in the world and the biggestindoor exhibition space in India. Apart from giving boost to business andindustry it is also expected to generate over 5 lakh employmentopportunities.The project is planned over an area of 221 acres at an estimatedcost of  25,700 crore rupees.The projectwill be developed in two phases. The first Phase will be completed by  December next year while the second phasewill be completed by December 2024. AnandKumar, AIR News, Delhi."

The government today hiked interest rate of smallsavings between 30 to 40 basis points for third quarter of current financialyear starting from 1st of next month. More from our correspondent:

 

"The interest rate of smallsavings deposit of one to three year time period has been increased by 30 basispoints. Interest rate of small savings deposit of five-year time period hasbeen hiked by 40 basis points. The interest rates on five-year recurringdeposit and senior citizen savings scheme have also been increased by 40 basispoints. Five year national savings certificate and Public Provident Fund schemewill now fetch eight percent interest rates instead of existing 7.6 percent.The interest rate on Kisan Vikas Patra will now be 7.7 percent while SukanyaSamriddhi Account Scheme will have 8.5 percent interest rate annually. The Supreme Court today extended by three months thedeadline given to the Enforcement Directorate, ED to complete the probe in theAircel-Maxis deal case. A bench of Justices A K Sikri and Ashok Bhushan said,the probe should be completed in three months. Additional Solicitor GeneralTushar Mehta, appearing for the ED, said the agency needs some two to threemonths to complete the probe The apex court had in March given the ED, asix-month deadline to complete the probe in the case. The ED is probing amoney-laundering case in the Aircel-Maxis matter arising out of 2G spectrumcases.

The Supreme Court today said that the newly appointedacting Director General of Police (DGP) of Jammu and Kashmir shall continue inoffice till the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) takes a decision on thematter. A bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra said acting DGP Dilbag Singh, whoreplaced S P Vaid, shall continue to operate and asked the UPSC to take adecision within four weeks on suitability of senior police officers who can beappointed as police chief in the state.As per the apex court's verdict, thestate government has to give a list of senior police officers to UPSC to checktheir suitability and shortlist three names from the list.

A group of about 90 ASHA representatives from across thecountry today called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Mr Modi encouraged themto devote their energies to work in coordination with other government agenciesto improve the quality of life in their villages. He appreciated the skill anddedication of ASHA workers, and recalled that even Bill Gates and Melinda Gateshad praised the efforts of ASHA workers towards eradication of diseases such asKala Azar.Mr Modi also explained how Government schemes and initiatives are allaimed at empowering the poor to fight poverty. Prime Minister recalled hisrecent interaction with the ASHA and Anganwadi workers across the country, viavideo conferencing. Health Minister JP Nadda was also present on the occasion.

The Civil Aviation Ministry today took cognizance of theincident in a Jet Airways flight in which some passengers suffered nasalbleeding due to failure to maintain cabin pressure. The flight was going fromMumbai to Jaipur and following the incident, it was turned back midway today.In a tweet, the Ministry said, it has asked Directorate General of CivilAviation to file its report immediately in this regard. The Ministry informedthat out of 166 people on board the 9W 697 flight, 30 were affected and havebeen given treatment. Meanwhile, DGCA said the crew has been taken off duty andthe Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau has started investigation.

The India Meteorological Department, IMD has issuedCyclone Alert for south Odisha and ­north Andhra Pradesh coasts. IMD said, thedepression over west central and adjoining east central Bay of Bengal hasintensified into a deep depression. The Bhubaneswar MeT Centre has predictedthat the system will cross the coast of Paradip and Puri tonight, causing heavyrain. The state MeT department issued red warning for 7 districts includingGanjam, Gajapati, Puri, Rayagada, Kalahandi, Kandhamal and Koraput districtswhile orange warning has been issued for 14 districts forecasting extremelyheavy rainfall following these areas. The MeT centre also issued yellow warningfor the rest of the State.The Met office said, sea will be rough to very roughover the North Bay of Bengal and along and off Odisha, West Bengal and northAndhra Pradesh Coasts during the next 36 hours. Fishermen have been advised notto venture into the sea in view of the rough sea conditions.

An inter- ministerial team, headed by specialsecretary of the Home Ministry BR Sharma, is visiting Kerala today toassess the damage caused by the recent devastating floods. The team will be ona five day visit to the state for on- the- spot assessment of damage andadditional requirement of funds. The move came after the Kerala government senta detailed memorandum seeking 4,700 crore rupees as compensation for thedamage. More from our correspondent:

"The team will reach Keralatoday and a few members of the team will visit Kozhikode and later Kannurdistricts tomorrow. The team will have meeting with district collectors andother officials concerned. The team will also visit the flood-affected regions.In case of any natural calamity beyond the coping capacity of a state, thestate government usually submits a detailed memorandum seeking additionalassistance. The Kerala government memorandum comprises details about the lossof human life, properties, infrastructure and crops. Shamila, AIR news, Thiruvananthapuram."

Home Minister Rajnath Singh will launch India’s firstever online and centralised National Database on Sexual Offenders (NDSO) in NewDelhi today. With this, India will become the ninth country in the world  to maintain such a database. The databasewill have record of name, photographs, address, fingerprint and other detailsof convicted sexual offenders. It is an initiative under National Mission forSafety of Women. Our correspondent reports, the database will be maintained bythe National Crime Records Bureau under the Ministry of Home Affairs. Thedatabase will be made available to law enforcement agencies for variouspurposes including investigation and employee verification.

The Skill India Mission has given a new lease of life tomany people in Puducherry. The scheme, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modion 15th of July, 2015, aims to train over 40 crore people in different skillsby 2022. Skill India helps to reduce dependence on urban and semi-urban jobs.Here is a ground report from our Puducherry Correspondent:-

 

"Under the Pradhan Mantri KaushalVikas Yojna, training and assessment fees are completely paid by thegovernment, and short-term training is also imparted at Pradhan Mantri KaushalVikas Yojna training centres to benefit the unemployed men and women. Abiramiof Puducherry, a beneficiary of Indian Bank Skill Training Centre, said thatthis training enhanced her self-confidence to great extent.

RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat has pitched for protection ofcows but disapproved of going against law in the name of cow vigilantism. TheRSS chief said, it is a crime to take law in one's own hands and there shouldbe stringent punishment in such cases. Mr. Bhagwat presented Sangh's views on anumber of issues while answering wide- ranging questions on the last dayof  RSS' three- day conclave in New Delhiyesterday. On Sangh's view on inter-caste marriages, Mr. Bhagwat said, itsupports such weddings and if there is a census on inter- caste marriages, themaximum cases will be those from the Sangh. Expressing anguish over crimeagainst women, he said an environment needs to be created where women feel safeand secure.

Today's win puts Abe on course to become Japan'slongest-serving Prime Minister.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called forconcrete action to follow up on North Korea's commitment to close a missiletest site with international monitors present. In a statement issued yesterday,Guterres said that the commitments include important military confidence-building measures and a commitment by North Korea to dismantle missile enginetesting infrastructure in the presence of experts from related countries.Guterres also offered UN help to advance efforts to fully free the Koreanpeninsula of nuclear weapons and called for unity among global powers.

The Trump administration has praised India for itssignificant counter terrorism actions and said Pakistan- based militant groupscontinued their terror attacks in the country. In its annual 'Country Report onTerrorism' the US State Department said, the Indian leadership expressedresolve to prevent terrorist attacks domestically and to bring to justice theperpetrators of terrorism. The report said that parts of India seriouslyimpacted by terrorism in 2017 included Jammu and Kashmir, the northeast Indianstates, and parts of central India where Maoists remain active.

Leading stock exchanges BSE and NSE will conduct mocktrading in commodity derivatives segments on Saturday in order to familiarisebrokers with the trading systems. The exchanges received the approval of  Securities and Exchange Board of Indiayesterday to launch the segments, starting with non-agriculture commoditieslike metals, from October 1st.
