Heavy polling was recorded for the second and last phase of Assembly elections in Chhattisgarh today. Voting took place in 72 constituencies in this phase. Polling remained by and large peaceful. One thousand seventy nine candidates are in the fray.
Briefing media in New Delhi this evening, Deputy Election Commissioner Umesh Sinha said, 71.93 per cent voter turnout was recorded in the state.
 
Of phase two, till the information received by us, it is 71.93 per cent. And, till now, on an average, it is said to be 74.17 per cent.
 
The polling began at 8 am and concluded at 5 PM. Chhattisgarh has 90 assembly segments. Our correspondent reports, the state went to polls in the first phase on the 12th of this month for 18 Maoist-affected constituencies.
 
People turned with enthusiasm in almost all the constituencies during the second phase of balloting today. As like in the first phase, there was a high turnout of women voters in this phase also. A large number of women and youth queued up to cast their votes from the morning when the polling began. Polling was by-and-large incident free. More than nineteen thousand polling booths had been set up for today’s polling. The electoral fate of one thousand seventy nine candidates were sealed in EVMs today. Meanwhile, electioneering has reached a feverish pitch in Madhya Pradesh and Mizoram as leaders of various political parties are leaving no stone unturned to win the voters.
 
The political battle for Madhya Pradesh has intensified ahead of assembly election with the heavyweight leaders of major political parties campaigned across the state today. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that corruption had ruined the nation when Congress was in power. He said, to tackle it, government is constantly making efforts and impact is clearly visible. Congress leaders Kamal Nath and Randeep Singh Surjewala have accused BJP for corruption in the state. Party leaders Jyotiraditya Sindhiya and Digvijay Singh also addressed rallies. In Mizoram, BJP National President Amit Shah and Congress President Rahul Gandhi campaigned in different constituencies.
 
Addressing rallies BJP President Amit Shah said that all the highways will be reconstructed if his party is voted to power. Also,  three Engineering college, two Medical college and three Nursing colleges will be set up in the state.  Amit Shah further said that underprivileged people will be provided rice at one rupee per kg. On the other side, Rahul Gandhi in a rally at Champhai in Aizawl said that in the last 5 years the state achieved 5 percent increase in production of agricultural and horticultural produces. He said Congress Government has established 1st medical college in the state and mooting for making the state Global Centre of Car Racing. Irene, AIR News, Aizawl.
 
Polling in Madhya Pradesh and Mizoram will be held in a single phase on the 28th of this month. Scrutiny of nominations took place in Rajasthan and Telangana for Assembly polls. Thursday is the last day for withdrawal of nominations.
 
613 nominations have been rejected after scrutiny in Rajasthan. Candidates have now started campaigning in the state. Railway Minister Piyush Goyal today campaigned in Jaipur while former chief minister Ashok Gehlot addressed public meeting in Jodhpur district and Congress leader Sachin Pilot campaigned in Tonk district.
 
Both states will go to polls on 7th of next month in a single phase.  Counting of votes in all the five states will take place on 11th of next month.

The sitting Lok Sabha Member of Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), Konda Visweswar Reddy today resigned from the party. He represents Chevella constituency. In a three page letter sent to TRS Chief and acting Chief Minister, K Chandrasekhar Rao, Mr Reddy said, he is saddened to see that the party has failed to fulfill people's aspirations.

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj announced today that she will not contest the 2019 General elections due to health reasons. Talking to media persons in Indore, the Minister said, she has informed the party about her decision. Ms Swaraj is the Member of Parliament from Vidisha constituency of Madhya Pradesh.

In Jammu and Kashmir, polling for the second phase of Panchayat elections was concluded peacefully. The elections are being held in nine phases across the state.
 
Voting was held in seven districts of Jammu division, six districts of the Kashmir Valley and  two in Ladakh region.
Chief Electoral Officer Shaleen Kabra said, overall 71.1 per cent polling was witnessed across the State in this phase. Meanwhile, counting is in progress and the results are expected by late night or tomorrow morning.
 
4,014 candidates are in the fray for 281 Sarpanch and 1286 Panch seats in this phase. Voting for the third phase will take place on 24th of this month.
 
Four blocks of  Udhampur district recorded  nearly 84 percent polling followed by  83.5 percent polling in two blocks of border district Rajouri. In another border district of Poonch  about  82 percent polling each was recorded in  two blocks. About  79 percent polling was recorded in three blocks of  Kathua district while about  78 percent polling was  recorded  in three blocks of  Kishtwar district. RK Raina, for AIR News, Jammu.

A Delhi court today awarded death penalty to convict Yashpal Singh in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots case. The court also awarded life imprisonment to another convict Naresh Sherawat in the case. This is the first sentencing in the case after the Special Investigation Team took over the probe in 2015.
 
The court had convicted Singh and Sherawat last week for killing two men in Delhi's Mahipalpur area during the riots after the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1984.  As per official records, over 2,800 Sikhs were killed across the country. Of them 2,100 were killed in Delhi alone in the riots.

In Maharashtra, six people were killed and several others were injured in an explosion near the Pulgaon army depot in Wardha district. The mishap took place this morning in Sonegao shiwar, when old ammunition exploded while being buried.
 
State government has announced a compensation of 5 lakh rupees to the kin of the deceased and 2 lakh rupees for those critically injured in the incident. 10 people who sustained minor injuries will get compensation of 50 thousand each.

In Afghanistan, at least 40 people were killed in a bomb explosion at a religious event in Kabul today. The explosion took place at a religious gathering at the Uranus Wedding Hall on the airport road. 80 people were wounded in the incident.
 
According to reports, people were celebrating Milad-uh Nabi, the birthday of the Prophet Mohammad. Early reports indicate the incident was a suicide bombing.

President Ram Nath Kovind left for Australia this evening after concluding his Vietnam tour. Mr Kovind held extensive talks with his Vietnamese counterpart Nguyen Phu Trong.
 
Before leaving for Sydney, President Ram Nath Kovind met Vietnamese Prime Minister to discuss growing economic opportunities in their own countries and region. During talks with his counterpart the two leaders discussed a range of bilateral and multilateral issues. MoUs in the field of communication, education, trade and investment were also signed to take the bilateral agenda forward. President addressed national assembly for first time as any Indian President. President was also accorded Military guard of honour at a presidential palace in Hanoi. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will share his thoughts with the people in India and abroad in the 50th edition of the Mann Ki Baat programme of All India Radio this Sunday. Mr Modi has been raising a number of important issues through the monthly programme. In his Mann Ki Baat address in August last year, he urged the country’s youth to concentrate on outdoor sports. He also spoke about government's unique initiatives like Sports Talent Search Portal for nurturing sporting talent.
 
In the 35th edition of Mann Ki Baat, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he wants the younger generation of the country to take part in sports. He said sports should become a part of everyones lives and youth should get manifested in the field sports as well.
 
Talking to AIR News, athlete Milkha Singh praised government's schemes like Khelo India as a remarkable initiative to hunt and nurture talent among the youth. He stressed that talented children should be traines well so that they can excel in sports.

The 49th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) began in Goa this evening. The opening ceremony was held at the Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Stadium in Bambolim, near Panaji. Goa Governor Mridula Sinha, Information and Broadcasting Minister Rajyavardhan Rathore and Information and Broadcasting Secretary Amit Khare were present on the occasion. A host of celebrities including Akshay Kumar and Karan Johar also graced the occasion. While Israel is the focus country, Jharkhand is the focus state this year. Speaking about the festival, I&B Minister Rajyavardhan Rathore  said,
 
This international film festival is basically a platform for our young generation to be able to showcase their talent, their skills, their stories to the international cinema. Also, it allows the international filmmakers to come and see our work as well. And, this is a place where we can collaborate with them.
 
Information and Broadcasting Secretary Amit Khare said that the government has focused on entertainment and films as a champion sector.
 
The state of Jharkhand is a focus state because we want to go by the dictum "Ek Bhaarat Shrestha Bharat". Let all the states be part of our progress. I am sure many other states will come forward to incentivise this industry which not only brings us entertainment but also brings us revenues and employment at various levels.
 
Veteran Israeli filmmaker Dan Wolman was presented this year’s lifetime achievement award.  The opening film The Aspern Papers was screened after the opening ceremony.
 
Over the next eight days, IFFI will showcase 212 films from 68 countries. Indian Panorama, which will present 26 feature films and 21 non-feature films, will be inaugurated tomorrow.
