Notification for the second phase of Lok Sabha elections was issued today. Ninety-seven constituencies, spread over 13 States and Union Territories, will go to polls in this phase on the 18th of next month. Elections will be held in all the 39 constituencies of Tamil Nadu, 14 seats in Karnataka 10 in Maharashtra, eight in Uttar Pradesh, five each in Assam, Bihar and Odisha, three each in Chhattisgarh and West Bengal, two in Jammu and Kashmir and one each in Manipur, Tripura and Puducherry.

Notification for bye-elections for 18 Assembly constituencies in Tamil Nadu has also been issued. AIADMK and DMK released their election manifestos this morning in Chennai.



In Karnataka, eleven nominations were todayfiled by six candidates after the notification was issued for the second phaseof Lok Sabha elections. Chief Electoral Officer Sanjiv Kumar informed mediapersons in Bengaluru, that the nominations were filed in Dakshina Kannada,Mandya, Mysuru, and Bengaluru south constituencies. On Model Code of Conductviolations, he said, more than one crore 35 lakh rupees cash was seized besidesliquor worth over 20 lakh rupees and other items worth over one crore 34 lakhrupees.


In Bihar, seven nomination papers were filedtoday for the first and second phase of Lok Sabha elections in the state.Altogether, eight nominations have been filled so far. Sitting JD(U) MP SantoshKumar filed his nomination from Purnea Lok Sabha seat.

Our correspondent reports, the ParliamentaryBoard meeting of Jitan Ram Manjhi-led Hindustani Awam Morcha will be held inPatna tomorrow to decide names of candidates.


The Election Commission has issued a show causenotice to  Union Minister and BJP leaderBabul Supriyo for violating Model Code of Conduct. Giving this information inKolkata this evening, West Bengal Additional Chief Electoral officer, SanjoyBasu said

Mr Supriyo had released a video recording ofthe party’s campaign song in electronic and social media without takingpre-approval from Media Certification and Monitoring Committee. He has beenasked to reply within 48 hours.

Meanwhile, four nominations have been filed forthe first phase of elections in the state and two nominations for the secondphase so far. The first phase will cover two Parliamentary seats on 11th ofApril and three seats in the second phase on 18th April.


BJP Central Election Committee is holdingmeeting in New Delhi to discuss the names of candidates for ensuing Lok Sabhaelections. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP Chief Amit Shah, senior partyleaders and Union Ministers Rajnath Singh, Arun Jaitely and Nitin Gadkari areamong those attending the meeting. This is the second meeting of the committeeto finalize list of candidates.

Meanwhile, the party said, Main Bhi Chowkidarcamapign has become a mass movement. Briefing media in New Delhi, party leaderand Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said the campaign was trending worldwideon Twitter on the day of its launch. He added that 20 lakh people tweeted aboutit and one crore people took the Main Bhi Chowkidar pledge on the NaMo App.


Congress President Rahul Gandhi has said if hisparty comes to power, it will reinstate special status and special planassistance for Arunachal Pradesh. He said, the Congress government will alsobring back the North East Industrial Policy. Mr Gandhi was speaking after launchingthe party’s campaign for Assembly and Lok Sabha polls in the state. Addressinga public rally in Itanagar, Mr. Gandhi also assured that the party will neverallow passing of Citizenship (Amendment) Bill. Simultaneous Lok Sabha andAssembly elections will be held in Arunachal Pradesh on 11th of April.


The Election Commission today directed allpolitical parties to desist from indulging in any political propagandainvolving activities of the Defence forces. The Commission ssued an advisory toPresidents of the political parties in this regard. The advisory says theparties are advised that their campaigners and candidates should desist fromsuch activities.

The poll panel cited its earlier advisorydirecting political parties to advise their candidates and leaders to refrainfrom displaying photographs of defence personnel and their functions inadvertisements as part of election campaign.


Social media platforms and Internet and MobileAssociation of India will come up with a Code of Ethics by tomorrow evening forLok Sabha elections. This comes following Election Commission's meeting in NewDelhi with representatives of these organisations on the usage of Social Mediaahead of the elections.

During the meeting, Chief Election CommissionerSunil Arora asked them to come with a similar code of conduct like Model Codeof Conduct. Mr  Arora cited Model Code ofConduct  as a unique and historicdocument which is followed by all political parties.

The meeting was centered on discussing issueslike appointment of dedicated grievance channel for expeditious action by theorganizations, pre- certification and transparency in expenditure of politicaladvertisements. Representatives  fromFacebook, WhatsApp, Twitter, Google, ShareChat, TikTok and BigoTV attended themeeting.


Former Supreme Court Judge Justice PinakiChandra Ghose will be the country's first Lokpal.  President Ram Nath Kovind has appointed theChairman of the Lokpal  along with othermembers of the anti -corruption watchdog. The Lokpal will have four judicialmembers including Justice Dilip B. Bhosale, Justice Pradip Kumar Mohantyand  Justice Abhilasha Kumari. Besides itwill have four other non- judicial members.


GST Council today approved a transition planfor new goods and services tax rates on residential properties. As per theplan, the developers of under-construction buildings may either opt to shiftto  revised lower rates without input taxcredit or stick to previous rates.

Revenue Secretary Ajay Bhushan Pandey toldmedia that for housing projects launched on or after the first of April thisyear,  developers will have to adhere tonew GST rates recommended by the Council last month. Developers can also optfor different GST options for separate buildings in a project depending ifconstruction started before or after 31st March this year.

The Enforcement Directorate, ED has attached 13properties of Mohammad Shafi Shah and six other terrorists ofHizb-ul-Mujahideen in Jammu and Kashmir. The properties worth one crore 22 lakhrupees were attached in connection with ongoing investigation againstHizb-ul-Mujhahideen commander Syed Salahuddin and others under Prevention ofMoney Laundering Act. During investigation, it was revealed that the terrorfunds are sent to India illegally through hawala channel and human carriers.


President Ram Nath Kovind presented theGallantry Awards and Distinguished Service Decorations at the DefenceInvestiture Ceremony in Rashtrapati Bhavan today. Prime Minister Narendra Modi,Army Chief General Bipin Rawat, Navy Chief Admiral Sunil Lanba and Air ForceChief Air Chief Marshal BS Dhanoa were present on the occasion.

"Kirti Chakras were conferred on SepoyVijay Kumar of Indian Army and Constable Pradip Kumar Panda of CRPFposthumously. Displaying exceptional bravery and commitment to duty duringcounter-terrorist operations in Jammu and Kashmir, both made the supremesacrifice for the nation. Shaurya Chakras were conferred on Assam RiflesRifleman Jaiprakash Oraon and Sepoy Ajay Kumar of the Mechanised Infantryposthumously. Mr Kovind also presented Shaurya Chakra to 16 year old IrfanRamzan Sheikh of Jammu and Kashmir who foiled an attack by three terrorists onhis house in 2017 when he was 14 years old. The President also conferredthirteen Param Vishisht Seva Medals, two Uttam Yudh Seva Medals and twenty-sixAti Vishisht Seva Medals to senior officers of the Armed Forces for distinguishedservice of an exceptional order. Prasar Bharati Chief Executive Officer ShashiShekhar Vempati has asked India's public service broadcasters to continuepublic broadcasting while becoming commercially viable. He was speaking on thesecond day of India International Broadcast Conclave in Hyderabad today. MrVempati stressed on creating an environment for experimentation on innovationsand new ideas relating to both broadcast content and finances. The CEO furthersaid, the public service broadcasters have a real challenge to be relevant toall segments of society.

"At the top end, there is certain consumersegment that wants digital, that wants all the latest stuff. At the bottom ofthe strata, there is a different household, which has different priorities. Weas a public broadcaster have to be relevant to the entire spectrum. That's ourchallenge that how do we be relevant to all of them. So your commercialactivity is so efficient that it is also paying for your public activity. Thatis a model that we have to figure out. How can we replicate that in otherareas."

 Meanwhile, Director General of All India Radio,F. Sheheryar has said the unique selling proposition of the nationalbroadcaster is its news. He visited AIR Mumbai today and said people continueto trust AIR News as the most credible source of news.

Newly appointed Goa Chief Minister PramodSawant took charge today at state secretariat in Porvorim near Panaji. MrSawant informed that he will take a floor test tomorrow, and expressedconfidence of winning it. Earlier today, Mr Sawant visited former ChiefMinister Manohar Parrikar’s home and met his family members.


The Madhya Pradesh High Court today stayed thestate government's ordinance increasing reservation for Other Backward Classes (OBC)category to 27 per cent from the earlier 14 per cent.


The semi-final matches of South Asian FootballFederation, SAFF Women's Championship will be played in Biratnagar, Nepal fromtomorrow. In the first match, hosts Nepal will face Sri Lanka in the morning.Defending champion India will play Bangladesh in the afternoon. Ourcorrespondent has more:
