BJP today released its first list of 184 candidates for Lok Sabha polls. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will contest again from Varanasi Lok Sabha constituency in Uttar Pradesh. Senior party leader J P Nadda announced the names of candidates in New Delhi this evening.


"प्रधानमंत्री श्री नरेन्द्र मोदी जी आप वाराणसी से चुनाव लड़ेंगे और हमारे राष्ट्रीय अध्यक्ष श्री अमित भाई शाह आप गांधी नगर से चुनाव लड़ेंगे। इसी के सा-साथ लखनऊ से आदरणीय राजनाथ जी चुनाव लड़़ेगे और नागपुर से श्री नितिन भाई गडकरी जी वह चुनाव लड़ेंगे।"


Mr Nadda said Smriti Irani will contest from Amethi Parliamentary constituency. Union Minister Col Rajyavardhan Rathore will contest from his sitting Jaipur Rural seat, D V Sadananda Gowda from North Bangalore, Kiren Rijiju from Arunachal West, V K Singh from Ghaziabad and actor-turned politician Hema Malini from Mathura, Poonam Mahajan from Mumbai North Central, Dr Jitendra Singh from Udhampur, Khalid Jahangir from Srinagar, K J Alphons from Ernakulam and K Rajasekharan from Thiruvananthapuram. Baijayant Jay Panda, who had joined BJP recently, has been given ticket from Kendrapara in Odisha. In West Bengal, Union Minister Babul Supriyo has again been fielded from Asansol, Rahul Sinha from Kolkata North and Chandra Kumar Bose from Kolkata South.


During the briefing, Mr Nadda said, the party has also finalized the name of 17 candidates from Bihar and it will be announced later.

The BJP also released a list of 18 candidates for Assembly elections in Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh. It contains names of 12 candidates for Sikkim and six for Arunachal Pradesh. This is the first list of candidates for 32-member Sikkim Assembly. The party had released a list of 54 candidates for 60-member Arunachal Pradesh Assembly on Sunday.


The Sikkim Democratic Front also released a list of 18 candidates, Sikkim Krantikari Morcha seven and Hamro Sikkim Party nine.

Indian National Lok Dal MLA from Nalwa in Haryana Ranbeer Gangwa joined the BJP in New Delhi today. He joined the party in presence of Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar.

In Tripura, four expenditure observers appointed by the Election Commission arrived in the state and started functioning to oversee election expenditure of candidates and parties. Chief Electoral Officer Sriram Taranikanti said arrangements for drinking water, electricity, sanitation and ramp for disabled voters will be made in all polling stations. He said free medical facility and air ambulance for voters and election staff are also being considered.

In Jammu & Kashmir, three unidentified terrorists were killed in separate encounters with security forces today. 


Security sources said, two terrorists were killed during a counter terrorist operation which was launched in Kalantra Kandi Kreeri area of Baramulla district last night. Body of one terrorist has been retrieved so far. Five army personnel were injured with two sustaining grievous injuries during the ongoing operation.


Another terrorist was killed by security forces in an ongoing encounter at Mir Mohalla in Hajin area of Bandipora district this evening. Talking to AIR News, DGP, Dilbagh Singh said, one of the two civilians held hostage by terrorists in the area, has been rescued.


"घर में मिलिटेंट ने दो लोगों को होस्टेज कर लिया था। एक बुजुर्ग आदमी को और एक बच्चे को उन्होंने अंदर अपने साथ बंद कर लिया था, तो थोड़ी देर पहले तक बच्चे को तो छुड़वा लिया था, जो बुजुर्गकर्मी थे उनके साथ-साथ जो कार्रवाई वहां पर जारी। दूसरा जो बांदीपुर के अलावा बारामूला जिले में एक पहाड़ी एरिया है, उस एरिया में हाईडआउट के ऊपर जैश--मोहम्मद के ग्रुप के ऊपर ऑपरेशन शुरू हुआ था। उस ऑपरेशन में भी कुल दो-तीन लोगों के ट्रैप होने की खबर थी और अभी ऑपरेशन खत् हुआ है, उसकी तलाशी वगैरह चल रही है।

An Army Jawan was martyred in shelling and firing by Pakistani forces from across the border in Sunderbani sector along the LoC in Jammu region today. Defence sources told AIR Jammu that the forces resorted to unprovoked mortar shelling and small-arms firing in Pallanwala, Jogwan and Keri area targetting Indian forward positions. The Indian troops retaliated to the ceasefire violation effectively, but one Army Jawan lost his life. The exchange of fire lasted for some time.


An Army jawan was martyred in ceasefire violation by Pakistan in the same area on Tuesday.

The US has again asked Pakistan to take concrete and sustained action to rein in on terror groups, mainly Jaish-e-Mohammed and Lashkar-e-Taiba, operating from its soil. A senior Trump administration official told reporters at the White House that if there's another terror attack on India without Pakistan having made a sustained effort against the groups, it would be extremely problematic for Islamabad.


The official also said that China has a responsibility not to shield Pakistan and join the international community in calling on Islamabad to take action against terrorists operating on its soil. official expressed disappointment over Beijing's decision to block a bid in the UN to designate JeM chief Masood Azhar as a global terrorist.

In Gujarat, one more person has died of swine flu. This takes the total number of fatalities due to the virus to 125 since January.


"Following the 55 new cases, the total number of swine flu cases registered during the year also went up to 4300. Ahmedabad and Surat have reported maximum new cases during the last 24 hours. The total number of cases till now has also crossed the total number of cases registered during entire 2018. State Health department has advised Municipal Corporations and Government Hospital to remain on following the increasing number of public rallies due to coming Lok sabha elections. The festival of colours, Holi was celebrated across the country with enthusiasm. The festival signifies the victory of good over evil and the arrival of spring. People across the country smeared each other with colours, exchanged greetings and savoured sweets on the occasion. Revellers hit the streets, dancing to popular songs and beat of drums as children ran with sprinklers and water balloons to celebrate the festival.


In Punjab and Haryana, colours of all hues and the smell of gulal pervaded streets as people of all ages celebrated Holi.


"In Punjab, at Anandpur Sahib the devotees from country and abroad enjoyed the festival on last day of Hola Mohalla. The whole land of Shri Anandpur Sahib was seen coloured in saffron. Although the festival of Hola Mohalla was ended today with taking out Mohalla by Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee on last day, the various Bhang organisations would carry the Mohalla tomorrow also. In Uttar Pradesh, celebrations began early this morning at temples in Mathura, the birth place of Lord Krishna, and Vrindavan where people chanted bhajans.


In West Bengal, thousands of people took part in Basanta Utsav at Santiniketan. Large number of devotees also gathered at temples across the state on the occasion.


Reports of Holi festivities have also come in from abroad.


"Indian nationals along with their Sri Lankan friends organize several programmes to celebrate the festival of colours. It started on weekend when Swami Vivekanand cultural center under High commission of India  organized cultural programmes and photo exhibition in a busy commercial mall. The centre organized another programme on Holi at its premises in Colombo where people exchanged greetings and dance to the tunes of Bollywood hits. In Nepal, the festival was celebrated in Kathmandu valley and several hilly districts yesterday. Holi is also known as Fagu Purnima in the country. The festival is being celebrated today in Terai region.


President Ram Nath Kovind, Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi greeted the people on the occasion.

In Iraq, at least 55 people were killed when an overloaded ferry sank in the Tigris river near Mosul today.


Health Ministry spokesperson Seif al-Badr said, those killed include, 33 women, 12 children and 10 men. He said, 30 people have been rescued so far. He said, search operation is underway to retrieve survivors.


The Head of Civil Defence Authority in the Nineveh province, Col Hussam Khalil told reporters that the mishap occurred when a large number of people were out in the tourist area celebrating Nowruz, which marks the Kurdish new year and the arrival of spring. Mr Khalil said, the ferry sank due to a technical problem.

In Afghanistan, at least six people were killed today by blasts in Kabul during Persian New Year celebrations. A Health Ministry spokesman said, twenty-three people were also injured in the explosions. Police said, the blasts were caused by three remote-controlled mines.

At the Special Olympics Games in Abu Dhabi, India returned with 368 medals
