Election activity in the country gears up as political parities continue to announce candidates for the remaining Lok Sabha seats.

In Uttar Pradesh, Political activities have intensified with BJP holding Vijay Sankalp rallies all over the state today. More from our correspondent:

"BJP National President Amit Shah launched the party campaign in Vijay Sankalp rally in Agra. Many senior party leaders like Rajnath Singh, Sushma Swaraj, JP Nadda, Piyush Goel, Anurag Thakur, Smriti Irani, Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, Keshav Maurya, Dinesh Sharma and Mahendra Nath Pandey attended Vijay Sankalp rallies in different parts of state. Starting his political campaign in Saharanpur Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath rebutted charges of irresponsibility in payment of sugar cane farmers leveled by Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi. Leader of Pragatisheel Smajwadi Party and candidate from Firozabad constituency Shivpal singh Yadav also intensified his campaign in the constituency and alleged that Samajwadi  Party is continuously disrespecting party patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav. Sushil Chandra Tewari, AIR News, Lucknow."

Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav will contest from Azamgarh constituency. Senior Party leader and MLA from Rampur Assembly constituency Mohammad Azam Khan is the party nominee for the Rampur Parliamentary constituency. The party made the announcement today. Mulayam Singh Yadav will contest from Mainpuri seat.

BJP today announced names of nine more candidates for Lok Sabha polls. The list consists of six candidates from Chhattisgarh and one each from Meghalaya, Maharashtra and Telangana. In Chhattisgarh, the party has given ticket to Santosh Pandey on Rajnandgaon seat, Jyoti Nand Dubey on Korba and Sunil Soni on Raipur Lok Sabha seat.

Congress has released another list of ten candidates for the ensuing Lok Sabha elections. The list consists of three candidates from Bihar, four from Maharashtra, one each from Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Jammu and Kashmir.

In Bihar, Congress has announced its candidates for Kishanganj, Katihar and Purnea seats while RJD announced its candidates for Bhagalpur and Banka seats. More from our correspondent:

"Congress has fielded former Union Minister Tariq Anwar from Katihar Lok Sabha seat, Udai Singh from Purnea and Mohmaad Javed from Kishanganj. RJD has given tickets to sitting MPs of the party Jay Prakash Narayan Yadav from Banka and Shailesh Kumar alias Bulo Mandal from Bhagalpur. The CPI has said, it would field former president of JNU student's Union, Kanhaiya Kumar from Begusarai Lok Sabha seat. The party will also contest on Khagaria, Madhubani and Motihari seats. On the other hand, the CPI(ML) said, it will contest four seats from Ara, Siwan, Karakat and Jahnabad. With K K Lal's report from Patna, Arun Joshi for AIR News."

Senior Congress leader BK Hariprasad will be the candidate from Bangalore South seat. Former Union Minister P Chidambaram's son Karti Chidambaram will try his fate from Sivaganga Parliamentary constituency in Tamil Nadu. The Congress party has given ticket to Haji Farooq Mir on Baramulla seat in Jammu and Kashmir.

In Assam, various political parties are campaigning to woo the voters. BJP General Secretary Ram Madhav addressed a rally at Diphu along with several party leaders. Chief Minister and senior BJP leader Sarbanand Sonowal and state BJP President Ranjit Kumar Dass interacted with party workers at Barpeta today. State Congress President Ripun Bora and former minister Rockybul Hussein also addressed rallies separately in the state today. Asom Gana Parishad and AIUDF also held meetings.

In Aruanachal Pradesh, security has been strengthened in view of the upcoming elections in the state. State police has left no stone unturned to conduct free and fair elections. More from our correspondent:-

"In Arunachal Pradesh, 34 companies of Para Military Forces have been deployed across the state for the ensuing simultaneous Assembly and Lok Sabha Elections. Speaking to AIR, The IG Police and State Nodal Officer for Election Security Sunil Garg, informed that 7 more companies will be deployed very soon. Mr Garg said that Arunachal State Police has identified 5 very critical districts in the state and the deployment of paramilitary forces will be more in these areas. More than 2 crore rupees cash has been seized till this afternoon by various surveillance teams across the state after Model Code of Conduct was enforced. Tomorrow is the last day for filing nominations for 1st phase. 91 constituencies spread over 20 states and union territories will go to polls in the first phase on the 11th of next month.

The Election Commission has said, exit polls can only be telecast on the evening of 19th May after the last phase of Lok Sabha elections gets over. The poll panel has issued an advisory to the media in which websites and social media platforms were included for the first time. A report:

"The Poll Body said, TV, radio channels, cable networks, websites and social media platforms should ensure that the content of their programmes during the 48-hour period before the end of polls in each phase do not contain any material that may be construed as promoting or prejudicing the prospect of any particular party or candidate. The Commission said, the advisory shall among other things include display of any opinion poll and of standard debates, analysis, visuals and sound-bytes. The Election Commission said, it will monitor the broadcasts made by news broadcasters from the time elections are announced until the conclusion and announcement of election results. Union Minister Arun Jaitley today said Congress party has been out of power for five years and it is staring at another defeat due to the dynastic character of the party. In a Facebook post, Mr Jaitley said dynastic parties have one major drawback which is - if the current generation dynast is lacking in charisma, understanding and popular confidence, the crowd around the family gets frustrated. He said, the same is happening with Congress party now. The Minister stated that dynasties demolish organisational structures and the party becomes a crowd around the dynast. He cited Congress as the original creator of this concept.  


Meanwhile, Congress has countered the attack of Mr. Jaitley on dynastic politics. In a press release, party leader Randeep Singh Surjewala listed the name of  BJP leaders and their family members who are in politics. He accused the ruling party of being  hypocrite on  the issue and also cited the names of NDA allies like LJP Chief Ram Vilas Paswan and Akali Dal leader Prakash Singh Badal.

BJP today accused Congress President Rahul Gandhi of amassing crores of rupees through illegal means. Talking to reporters in New Delhi, party spokesperson Sambit Patra alleged that Mr. Gandhi is not a professional and his only income is through his salary as an MP but his assets have increased many times.

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj has asked Indian High Commissioner in Pakistan to send a report on incident where two minority Hindu girls were abducted on the eve of Holi in Sindh province. The teenaged girls, 13 year-old Raveena and 15-year old Reena were allegedly kidnapped and forcibly converted to Islam in Ghotki district.

The incident has led the Hindu community in Pakistan to stage massive protests, seeking stern action against the perpetrators and reminding Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan of his assurance to religious minorities to protect their rights.

Meanwhile, Pakistan Information and Broadcasting Minister Fawad Chaudhry said, it is his country's internal issue. Replying to Mr Chaudhry's tweet, Mrs. Swaraj asked him if giving data on abducted Hindu girls is making them nervous. She attributed the nervousness to a guilty conscience.

India has achieved an 84 per cent reduction in tuberculosis deaths among people living with HIV by 2017. According to the Joint United Nations Programme on the UNAIDS, it is the highest recorded decline among over 20 nations and it is also three years ahead of the 2020 deadline.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said the Centre and various State Governments are working hard to make India TB-free by 2025, ahead of 5-year global target of 2030. In a tweet, on the World TB Day today, Mr Modi said, the Centre reaffirms its commitment towards ensuring a TB-free society. He said the Government's efforts, such as TB Free India campaign and Ayushman Bharat, are improving health standards and providing assistance to TB patients.

In Thailand, counting is underway at over 90,000 polling stations after the voting came to an end in country's first general election since 2014 military coup.

Election Commission said, with over 90 per cent of overall votes counted, the pro-military party Palang Pracharat is leading with 7.3 million votes. Close behind with 6.6 million votes is the main opposition Pheu Thai Party.

In Men's Hockey, a second round-robin match beween India and South Korea ended in a draw with a score of one goal each, in the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup at in the Malaysian city of Ipoh today. The match was  suspended temporarily due to inclement  weather. India will now  play with  Malaysia on Tuesday, Canada the next day and Poland on Friday.

In IPL, a match is underway between host Mumbai Indians and  Delhi Capitals. Delhi Capitals were  112 for 3 in 13.3 overs when reports last came in. Mumbai Indians had won the toss and elected to field.

In an another match, Kolkata Knight Riders defeated Hyderabad Sun Risers by 6 wickets. Chasing a target of 182 runs KKR scored 183 runs with a loss 4 wickets in 20 overs. Tomorrow Rajasthan Royals will take on  Kings Eleven Punjab at Jaipur.
