Senior BJP leader and Former Finance Minister Arun Jaitley passed away in New Delhi today. He was ailing for some time. He was undergoing treatment in the intensive care unit under the supervision of a multi-disciplinary team of doctors at All India Institute of Medical Sciences, AIIMS in New Delhi.

In a statement, AIIMS said, Mr Jaitley who was admitted to the hospital on 9th of this month passed away at 12:07 PM today. A tribute:-


A towering figure in Indian politics, former Finance Minister Arun Jaitley was a senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party. Arun Jaitley was the Union Finance Minister in the Narendra Modi-led National Democratic Alliance Government’s first term in power at the Centre. Besides finance, Jaitley previously held the defence, corporate affairs, commerce and industry and law and justice portfolios in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Narendra Modi Governments. Jaitley, who has been indisposed for some time, was not able to present the Union Budget for 2018-19 and the 2019-20 Interim Budget due to his poor health. He also did not contest the Lok Sabha Elections in 2019.  With Jaitley as the Finance Minister, the government was able to take several key economic initiatives like demonetization and the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST). In Jaitley's stewardship, the Modi Government merged the Railway Budget with the General Budget. Moreover, the decision to advance the date of the General Budget to 1st of February was also taken with Jaitley as the Finance Minister. He also introduced Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code to resolve the issues with companies that were turning insolvent. IBC has played a key role in the corporate sector in recent times. Arun Jaitley has contributed in a major way to the BJP and the government for over two decades. He has been one of the most important strategists for the party. Jaitley was seen as a key player in preparing the party's strategies for the Lok Sabha and the Assembly elections for decades.

President Ram Nath Kovind, Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu,  Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other senior leaders of BJP and other parties have expressed their grief over the passing away of Arun Jaitley.  Mr Kovind said, a brilliant lawyer, a seasoned parliamentarian and a distinguished Minister, he contributed immensely to nation building.

In a series of tweet, Mr Modi said, Jaitley was a political giant, towering intellectual and legal luminary. He was an articulate leader who made a lasting contribution to India. Prime Minister also spoke to Mr Jaitley's wife and son and expressed condolences.

Vice-President M Venkaiah Naidu said, Mr Jaitley's death is an irreparable loss for the country and personally to him also. Mr.Naidu said, he had no words to express grief.   


"Under a Minister, he has done an excellent job to the statistician of one and all. He has friends across the parties and is very friendly with the media. And he was the recipient of the best parliamentarian award."


Defence Minister Rajnath Singh described Jaitley as a proficient lawyer by profession and an efficient politician by passion.

Congress Interim President Sonia Gandhi has also expressed deep pain and distress at the untimely passing away of Arun Jaitley. Condoling his death, she said that he had a long innings as a public figure, Parliamentarian and Minister and his contributions to public life will forever be remembered.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that United Arab Emirates can be India's Valuable partner in realizing the objective to achieve five trillion dollar economy through a mutually beneficial partnership.

Speaking to the Emirates News Agency representative, in an interview, the Prime Minister said that India has embarked on the ambitious, yet achievable, path to be a five trillion dollar economy by 2024-25. The country is targeting about 1.7 trillion dollar worth of investments in the coming five years. To achieve this vision, the government is working to promote inflows from domestic as well as foreign sources. He said that UAE-India relations are at their best ever. 

He added that there has been an increasing interest in investments in India in sectors ranging from renewable energy, food, ports, airports, defence manufacturing and other sectors.

Speaking about Indian community in the UAE, he said, the country is immensely proud that the rich contribution of the community to building a modern, diverse and vibrant UAE are also being acknowledged and appreciated by the UAE leadership.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched Rupay Card in the United Arab Emirates today. With this, UAE has become the first country in the Middle East to have this facility. Mr Narendra Modi will receive the highest civilian award of United Arab Emirates, the Order of Zayed at a special function in a short while from now. The ceremony will take place in the Presidential Palace of the Emirates. Prime Minister Modi and the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi Sheik Mohammed bin Zayed Sultan Al-Nahyan will jointly release the commemorative stamp on Mahatma Gandhi commemorating the 150 years of Bapu. Previously, The Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, Sheik Mohammed bin Zayed Sultan Al -Nahyan expressed his appreciation for the role and the efforts of developing friendly relations extending the bridges of cooperation between the two Countries.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be arriving in Bahrain later in the day today for the two-day state visit. This will be the first ever Prime Ministerial visit from India to Bahrain. During the visit, Prime Minister would be meeting and holding talks with Prime Minister of Bahrain Shaikh Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa on entire spectrum of bilateral relations and also regional and international issues of mutual interest. More from our Bahrain correspondent:


"Prime Minister Narendra Modi will arrive in Bahrain today afternoon where he will hold discussion with Bahrain Prime Minister on the ways to further enhance India’s bilateral relations and share views on issues of mutual interest. Exchange of agreements would be made in different sectors of mutual cooperation by both the sides. He will also interact with Indian diaspora at Bahrain National stadium. Mr. Modi will also take part in dinner banquet hosted by Bahrain King Shaikh Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and hold delegation-level talks and the next day he will launch the renovation of the 200 year-old Shreenaathji temple in Manama. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has said that India's growth in comparison to other countries is relatively better. She said, the country's growth rate is higher than United States and China. The Minister's statement came yesterday, while announcing a slew of measure to achieve the higher economic growth. The Finance Minister said, consumption growth is not down in just emerging economies but also in advanced ones. The Finance Minister said, reform has been the top agenda for the government since 2014 and the momentum with which government wants to carry out reforms will continue.


"As a result of the US and China trade war and subsequent currency devaluation of China very volatile situation has developed in the global trade. India again in a low position, comfortably very high the growth rate, with still in comparison to many by these countries high and if anything even in compare to China and United State our growth is higher than everybody else."


Stressing on the government's focus on tax reforms she said, the government wants to move from prosecution to more human approach. She stated that the government has taken several measures to save the income tax assesses from harassment.

Among the measures to boost the Automotive Sector include, lifting the ban on purchase of new vehicles for replacing all old vehicles by government departments and consider various measures including scrapage policy to boost demand.

Meanwhile, the United States and Indian industries have hailed the slew of announcements made by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. US India Business Council President Nisha Desai Biswal said. This will strengthen India's position as global investment destination. She said the comprehensive set of proposed reforms will provide needed stimulus for the economy.

President of FICCI Sandip Somany said, this will give a major boost to the economy that had started showing signs of a deep slowdown.

ASSOCHAM President B.K. Goenka said, the decision on roll back of surcharge on Foreign Portfolio Investors, upfront capital infusion of 70 thousand crore rupees into public sector banks and fiscal sops along with policy clarity on the automobile sector will restore confidence of investor as also consumer.

The Home Minister has said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi completed the national integration which was started by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. He said, Sardar Patel integrated Hyderabad in 1948 and the integration has been completed with complete integration of Kashmir now. He was addressing Indian Police Service probationers after reviewing a passing out parade at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy in Hyderabad this morning. 

The Home Minister stressed on maintenance of peace and tranquility for the development of the country. He said law and order plays key role in the economic development and particularly in achieving five trillion dollar economy.


"आज ढेर सारे चुनौतियां आंतरिक सुरक्षा के लिए देश के सामने है। आंतकवाद की चुनौती है, नारकोटिक् के दूषण को समाप् करने की चुनौती है, साइबर क्राइम को कंट्रोल करने की चुनौती है और पड़ोसी देशों की खड़ी की हुई चुनौतियों का सामना आज से आपने करना है। जब तक देश आंतरिक रूप से सुरक्षित नहीं हो सकता, तब तक विकसित नहीं हो सकता।" 


He asked the IPS probationers to be SMART police as the Prime Minister always stresses.

Janmashtami, is being celebrated in different parts of the country today. In Uttar Pradesh, Birthday of Lord Sri Krishna is being celebrated with religious fervour and gaiety across the state. A report :-

Various cultural troops and artiste from Bollywood and other places are  depicting the life of  deity Banke Bihari through their songs and Bhajans. In the wake of severe floods in western Maharashtra, especially in Kolhapur and Sangli districts, earlier this month, the Dahi Handi festival is being celebrated in a subdued manner:-


"Many dahi handi mandals and organisers of events in Mumbai and other parts of the state have decided to keep the celebrations low-key, to show solidarity with the people affected by the devastating floods. Some of the mandals are also donating money for the flood relief work. Many mandals have decided to celebrate the festival just to keep the tradition on. The city is witnessing several Govinda mandals on the streets since morning. Not only men but also women Govindas are participating in the competition. Madhuri Pange, AIR News, Mumbai."


In Gujarat  main celebrations are being held at Jagatmandir- Dwarika and Lord Ranchhodrai Temple in Dakor. President Ram Nath Kovind, Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, have greeted people on the occasion. In a tweet, Mr Modi expressed hope that blessings of Lord Krishna will always bring happiness and good health in lives of people.

Addressing the Regional Conference of North East Zone and Kolkata region in Guwahati today, Mr. Khare said that local celebraties or well known persons must be involved in the programs that are being organised or broadcast by the Ministry.

Mohun Bagan will take on Kerala Gokulam in the final of Durand Cup Football tournament today at 5 PM at VYBK ground in Kolkata. 16-time Durand Cup winner Mohan Bagan has reached final beating Real Kashmir 3-1 after 10 years whereas Gokulam Kerala has defeated East Bengal 3-2 in the semifinal.
