  • 43 people killed in a massive fire at Anaj Mandi area in Delhi this morning; President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi express grief over the incident.

In the national capital, at least 43 people were killed after a massive fire broke out in Anaj Mandi at Rani Jhansi Road early this morning. Delhi police said, 60 people were rescued and out of them 43 died in the tragic incident. The injured were admitted to LNJP, RML and Hindu Rao Hospitals. A report-

"This is the second massive fire incident in Delhi this year. Earlier in February, seventeen people were killed in a fire incident due to suffocation in Karolbagh area. This time, the incident took place at 5 in the morning in the Anaj Mandi area of Rani Jhansi Road. Chaotic scenes were witnessed at the site with relatives and locals rushing to the area soon after the fire broke out. Personnel of the Delhi Police and Fire Services faced a lot of problems during the rescue operation, due to huge quantities of plastic and raw materials lying inside the 4-storeyed building. 60 people were rescued from the spot of which 43 have lost their lives. Two Police and Two Fire Service personnel were also injured in the incident. National Disaster Response Force personnel have undertaken search operations inside the building. Delhi Government has ordered a magisterial probe into the fire incident. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who visited the site, directed the District Magistrate of Central Delhi to submit the report within a week. Mr Kejriwal announced a compensation of 10 lakh rupees each to the families of the dead and one lakh rupees each to the injured and free treatment.

"बहुत ही दुखद हादसा है। चालीस से ज्यादा लोगों की मौत हो चुकी है। मैंने मैजिस्ट्रियल इंक्वायरी के आर्डर दे दिए हैं। एक्जेट कॉज अभी तक पता नहीं लगा है, वो जांच के बाद पता चलेगा और जो भी दोषी होंगे उनको हम कड़ी से कड़ी सजा दिलवाएंगे।"

Senior BJP leader and the Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs Hardeep Singh Puri, who reached the spot said that BJP will extend financial support of five lakh rupees each to the families of those who have lost their lives.

"हमारा कर्तव् बनता है कि इस समय हम पूरी सहायता उन परिवारों को दें और जो अफेक्टिड है उन तक पहुंचाएं। ये शार्ट सर्किट था, इमिजेट कॉस था, हमने कुछ ऐसे निर्णय लिए हैं कि जहां पर भी इनलिगल, अनॉथराइज् जगह है उनकी डेवलप्मेंट करनी चाहिए।"

Delhi BJP chief Manoj Tiwari who also visited the site described it as a sad incident. He said, as per initial information, fire broke out due to short circuit and people died of suffocation.

Meanwhile, Delhi Police has filed an FIR against the owner of the building where the tragic fire incident took place. Talking to reporters, Delhi Police PRO M S Randhawa said the case has been transferred to Delhi Crime Branch.

"जो कॉस ऑफ फॉयर है वो फायर डिपार्मेंट देगा, लेकिन प्राइम ऑफ एसी हमें लग रहा है ये शार्ट सर्किट से आग लगी है और इसमें जो एक प्लास्टिक का मटरियल काफी था उस वजह से इसको कंट्रोल करने के एर्फट्स है उसमें हमारे फायर टेंडर को काफी प्रॉब्लम आई। जो अनफॉरच्यूनेट डैथ हुई है वो ज्यादा एसफीक्सिया से, सफोकेशन से हुई है और फायर टेंडर के कर्मचारियों को थोड़ी चोट आई है और पुलिस वालों को भी चोट आई है दिल्ली पुलिस ने एफआईआर दर्ज कर दी है। किसी ने रेंट पर ली है या कोई चला रहा था तमाम के खिलाफ सख् कार्रवाई की जाएगी।

President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed concern over the fire incident. In a tweet, Prime Minister said, the fire is extremely horrific and his thoughts are with those who lost their loved ones. He announced an ex-gratia of two lakh rupees each from Prime Minister's National Relief Fund to the next of kin of those who have lost their lives due to the tragic fire in Delhi. He also approved 50 thousand rupees each for those seriously injured in the fire. Union Home Minister Amit Shah and the Delhi chief Minister also expressed deepest condolences over tragic loss of lives in the fire accident.


Campaigning gains momentum for the remaining three phases of assembly elections in Jharkhand. After completion of two phases of polling, all political parties are now focusing on the remaining 48 seats. 17 constituencies spread over 8 districts will go to the polls on the 12th of this month in the third phase. In the fourth phase, polling will be held for 15 seats on the 16th of December. Our correspondent reports that leaders of various political parties are addressing rallies to woo the voters.

"Senior BJP leader and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is holding three election rallies in Madhupur, Jharia and Birani. Union Minister Smriti Irani is also seeking votes for BJP candidates in four assembly seats. National spokesperson of BJP Sudhanshu Trivedi claimed in Ranchi that only BJP can give good governance in Jharkhand. Jharkhand Vikas Morcha Chief Babulal Marandi addressed public meeting20at Bokaro. He promised that his party would ensure education for all poor and backward families.  Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) working president Hemant Soren said if voted to power UPA alliance will formulate policies for tribal people.  All Jharkhand Students Union (AJSU) Chief Sudesh Mahto and AIMIM Chief Asaduddin Owaisi also addressed public meetings. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hold a public meeting in Bokaro (बोकारो) in support of the BJP candidate tomorrow. Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi will address two public meetings tomorrow in Barakagaon (बडकागांव) and BIT Mesra ground in Ranchi in support of the UPA candidates. The polling process for 81-member Jharkhand Assembly will be completed in five phases. Counting of votes will be held on the 23rd of this month.


In Karnataka, the counting of votes in 15 Assembly constituencies will start from 08:00 AM tomorrow. There are 14 counting tables placed in 10 counting centers and 21 counting tables in Yeshwanthapura where the number of contesting candidates is more. The Postal Ballots numbering 808 will be counted first. The by-election to 15 constituencies was held due to the resignation and disqualification of 15 MLAs from Congress and JD(S). The ruling BJP has the strength of 105 members including the Speaker and a lone Independent MLA supports it. So it has to win at least six more seats to gain a simple majority. There are 165 candidates in the fray with Congress and BJP fielding 15 each and JD(S) 12 candidates. The voters’ turnout during the by-election, held last Thursday was 67.91 per cent. The highest voting percentage of 90.90 per cent was recorded in Hosakote Assembly Constituency. The lowest voting percentage of 46.74 per cent was recorded in K R Pura Assembly Constituency in Bengaluru.


The three-day conference of Directors General and Inspectors General of Police will conclude at Pune in Maharashtra today. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the concluding session. A report from our correspondent:-

"The conference of Prime Law enforcing Authorities in country has So far deliberated on various aspects of Policing and Security issues, including border protection, the linkage of narcotics and terrorism, up gradation of forensic capability, threat from radicalisation in the digital era, and evidence-based policing. While specific cases were highlighted, road maps for implementation of key recommendations were also framed. Nitin Kelkar for AIR NEWS Pune."


In Odisha, President Ram Nath Kovind today laid the foundation stone for a memorial to mark completion of 200 years of Paika Rebellion, a valiant uprising of Paikas in 1817 against the British Rule which is often termed as the First War of Independence. The proposed project will come up at the foothills of Barunei hills in Khurda district. The memorial is seen as an epitome of Odisha’s valour and will serve as an inspiration for the youth. The Paika Rebellion memorial which will come up in 10 acres of land will be a source of inspiration for the youths and generations to come.


The NHRC team continued its probe into the encounter of the four accused in the veterinary doctor's rape and murder case in Hyderabad on the second consecutive day. The team recorded statements of the injured police men and examined bodies of the four accused. They also studied postmortem report and visited the encounter place at Chatanpally near Shadnagar. Meanwhile, the bodies of the four accused killed in the encounter, have been kept at Mahabubnagar government hospital under tight security following the state high court's directive. The high court will take up a petition tomorrow over the encounter.


In Uttar Pradesh, the Unnao rape case victim was cremated in her parental village today.The last rites were performed under tight security. A large number of people and police alongwith administrative officials were present on the occasion.  State Minister of Labor and  Employment Swami Prasad Maurya and Technical Education minister Kamal Rani Varun visited the bereaved family to console.

The State government provided a  financial assistance of 25  lakhs rupees  to the family members of the victim last night. Commissioner of Lucknow division Mukesh Meshram said, two  houses under Prime Minister Awas Yozna for family members will also be provided and a suitable job to one family member of the victim will be arranged. 


In Jammu & Kashmir, the weather is likely to remain dry till Tuesday with night temperatures plummeting below freezing point in Srinagar and elsewhere in Kashmir. The foggy conditions have disrupted air traffic and surface transport. More from our correspondent:-

"Officials said the Srinagar Jammu national highway connecting Kashmir valley with the rest of the world is open. They said no civilian vehicle is allowed to ply on the highway as only security forces vehicles will ply from both sides of the highway today. The traffic is through from Leh towards Srinagar. Since Friday the air traffic is disrupted from Srinagar airport due to intense foggy conditions. The historic 86-km-long Mughal Road after remaining closed for over a month due to snowfall, has been thrown open today with one way traffic to clear stranded vehicles from Shopian South Kashmir towards Bafliaz in Pir Panchal region connecting Rajouri & Poonch districts. TARIQ RATHER, AIR NEWS, SRINAGAR."


India will take on West Indies in the second T-20 of three match cricket series at Thiruvananthpuram today. The Match will start at 7 PM. All India Radio will broadcast live commentary on the match alternately in Hindi and English. It can be heard on Rajdhani, FM Rainbow and additional frequencies from 6:30 PM. 

India defeated the visitors by six wickets in the first match at Hyderabad on Friday to take a 1-0 lead in the T-20 series. A win today will not only help India seal their second series but also give them a chance to test the fringe players as they continue their preparation for the T20 World Cup.


The Indian Junior Women’s Hockey Team won the 3-Nations Tournament in Australia today as they finished top of the points table despite suffering their first loss of the competition. India had seven points from four matches, ahead of hosts Australia on goal difference, with New Zealand finishing third with only three points from their four matches. The Indian team lost 1-2 to hosts Australia in their fourth and final match of the competition today. In this match, Gagandeep Kaur scored the solitary goal for India in the 53rd minute to cancel out Abigail Wilson's 15th minute strike. However, the Australian youngster scored yet again in the 56th minute to give her team a 2-1 win.


In 13th South Asian Games in Nepal, India remains on top with 221 medals comprising 113 gold, 71 silver and 37 bronze. On the eighth day of games, India clinched 3 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze today. In Squash, India bagged one gold, two silver and one bronze. In women’s singles, India won gold and silver. In shooting, India won 2 gold and one bronze. In men’s 10 meter air pistol team event, Shravan Kumar, Ravinder Singh and Sumit Raman clinched gold. In individual category, Shravan Kumar grabbed gold and Ravinder Singh bronze.
