Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has said that government is working on economic issues and will continue to address the problem of the industries. She was briefing media in New Delhi today. On the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, She said, government has been very quick-footed on the issue. Ms Sitharaman said, Pre-budgetary consultations are beginning from Monday.

In a presentation, Chief Economic Adviser, Krishnamurti Subramanian said, the continued liberalization has resulted in record Foreign Direct Investment inflows of 35 billion dollars in the first half of the current year. He said, Government has also carried out the disinvestment in non-priority areas where competitive markets have come of age.  He said, capitalization of public sector banks and giving last-mile funding to realty projects was announced.

"Recaptilization of the Public Sector Banks, which was announced in the budget and has been followed up. The credit expansion by the public sector banks by emphasizing some of the aspects that were needed to be decided specially enabling honest decision making."

Revenue Secretary Ajay Bhushan Pandey said, Integrated-GST refund of 38,988 crore rupees has been released so far this fiscal as compared to 56,057 crore rupees in full 2018-19 financial year.


The Seventh Economic Census was today launched in the National Capital Territory of Delhi.  Director General (Social Statistics) of Central Statistics Office Mr A K Sadhu said, for the first time the entire census is being conducted on a digital platform by the use of an application which will ensure high accuracy and data security. He said, Delhi is the 26th State where the survey has been launched. The process is already on in 20 States and five Union Territories.

The economic census was first held in 1978. This is the Seventh Census which will provide disaggregated information on various operational and structural aspects of all establishments in the country.


Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reiterated India’s commitment to partner the Government of the Maldives for a strong, democratic, prosperous and peaceful Maldives. Interacting with Foreign Minister of Maldives Abdulla Shahid who called on him in New Delhi today, Mr Modi conveyed his compliments on the achievement of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih in its first year. He noted with satisfaction the enhanced level of engagement between India and Maldives and the positive outcomes of bilateral cooperation during the last one year. 

The Prime Minister expressed confidence that the discussions during the Sixth Joint Commission Meeting will enable both sides to review progress and chart even a more ambitious way forward to further strengthen and deepen the mutually beneficial cooperation.

The Maldivian Foreign Minister thanked Mr Modi for his vision and strong leadership in driving the India-Maldives relationship.

Meanwhile, The 6th India-Maldives Joint Commission Meeting, JCM was held in New Delhi today. Foreign Minister of Maldives Abdulla Shahid co-chaired the meeting with External Affairs Minister Dr. S Jaishankar to induct further momentum in bilateral ties between the two countries. After the meeting, three MoUs were signed and exchanged. One of the MoUs is on cooperation between the Election Commissions of India and Maldives and another on cooperation between the Financial Intelligence Units. Both countries also exchanged Instrument of Ratification for the Treaty on Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters. The JCM, took place after a gap of over 4 years.


Both the Houses of Parliament were today adjourned sine die. In his valedictory remarks, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla  said, several important bills were passed and issues were discussed during the session.

In his valedictory remarks, Rajya Sabha Chairman, M. Venkaiah Naidu said, the session registered around 100 per cent productivity and passed 15 important bills.  He said, over 11 hours were wasted in the session due to disruptions. However, members sat beyond scheduled hours to complete the business. 

Earlier, Rajya Sabha witnessed two adjournments. When the House met after first adjournment at 12 Noon, Mr Derek O’Brien of TMC tried to raise the issue of the situation in the North-Eastern States after the enactment of Citizenship (Amendment) Act. Leader of Opposition, Gulam Nabi Azad said, government should come out with a statement over the situation after the enactment of Citizenship Amendment Bill.  As uproar continued, the Chairman adjourned the House till 1 P.M.

In the morning, the House was adjourned till 12 Noon following uproar by BJP members over the reported remarks of senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on the rape incidents in the country.

The Lok Sabha also witnessed adjournment till 12 Noon over Rahul Gandhi’s reported comments. As pandemonium continued, Speaker Om Birla adjourned the house till 12 Noon.In the morning, both the Houses paid homage to the martyrs of Parliament terror attack.


Lok Shabha Speaker Om Birla today said that during the Winter Session the Lower House tried to dispose of maximum legislative business. Briefing reporters this evening in New Delhi, Mr Birla said, important issues including air pollution and climate change were discussed in the session. He said, the house also sat around 29 hours more than the scheduled time to complete the business.

"ये सत्र संक्षिप् था, लेकिन फिर भी 130 घंटे 14 मिनट ये सत्र चला। कुल 20 बैठकें इस सत्र की हुई और इस सत्र में भी 28 घंटे 45 मिनट समय से देर रात्रि तक माननीय सदस्यों ने अपनी उपस्थिति से इस सदन को चलाया और ये कह सकते है कि इसकी प्रोडेक्टविटी भी 115 प्रतिशत होगी।"


Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi has described the Winter Session of Parliament as one of the best session in terms of productivity. Briefing reporters after the conclusion of the session, Mr Joshi said, Lok Sabha registered productivity of 116 per cent while Rajya Sabha's productivity was around 100 per cent. He also attacked senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for his reported remarks on rape incidents in the country.

"This is one of the best session as far as productive is concerned. The major highlight of the session is passing of Citizen Amendment bill, SC/ST reservation continuation. The Arms amendment bill Chit fund amendment bill, National Capital statuary act Delhi. Recognition of property rights of residents in unauthorized colony bill-2019, The trans gender persons protection rights bill 2019. These are the important bills."


A BJP delegation today approached  the Election Commission over the reported remarks of senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on rape incidents. The delegation led by Union Minister and BJP leader Smriti Irani met the commission and demanded strongest action against Mr Gandhi. Talking to reporters after the meeting, Ms Irani alleged that Mr Gandhi has used the rape incident as a political tool.

"The entire nation looks upon the Constitutional Authority to ensure that dignity of women is upheld and those politicians who seek to use rape as a political tool should be reprimanded with heaviest punishment .


Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman also slammed Rahul Gandhi over his reported remarks. Addressing a press conference in New Delhi today, she termed Rahul Gandhi's statement as horrendous. Reacting to BJP's demand for apology,  Congress leader Rahul Gandhi told reporters outside the Parliament that he has simply made a point and will never apologize.


In Jharkhand, campaigning would come to an end tomorrow for the fourth phase of State Assembly elections. Polling would be held in 15 Assembly segments spread over four districts on 16th. The poll bound districts of the fourth phase are Dhanbad, Deoghar, Giridih and Bokaro. Meanwhile, campaigning has been intensified in Koylanchal and Santhal Pargana regions for the fourth and fifth phase of elections. Our correspondent reports Star campaigners and senior leaders of all political parties are holding series of public meetings and rallies to garner support for their party candidates. 

"Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Yogi Adityanath said, the party has ensured security and prosperity of the country. Congress leader Sachin Pilot addressed meetings in Jharia and Dhanbad. He said, the alliance of Congress, JMM and RJD will increase opportunities of employment. All Jharkhand Students Union (AJSU) Chief Sudesh Mahto promised that if voted to power, his party will work for rehabilitation of displaced people of Jharia, Dhanbad and other regions. Senior leaders of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, Jharkhand Vikas Morcha and left parties are also holding election rallies. Dharmendra Kumar Rai, AIR News Ranchi."


In Assam, the situation improved today as there was no report of violence during last 12 hours. Curfew was relaxed for five hours at Dibrugarh municipal town area. However, indefinite curfew continues at Kamrup metro district. Security forces have arrested at least 30 miscreants for their alleged involvement in violence.  Talking to AIR, Kamrup Metro Deputy Commissioner Biswajit Pegu said necessary steps are being taken to provide essential food items in Guwahati and other parts of the district. 

"As far as the scarcity of the essential commodities is concerned , we just had a meeting with the whole salers, retailers, and traders of the essential commodities. I dont think there should be any problem as far as the food grain is concerned or food commodities are concerned or essential commodes are concerned."

Meanwhile,  Chief Minister Sarbanand Sonowal again appealed people to maintain peace and tranquility. He said, the Assam Government is ready to talk to all who are opposing the  Amended Citizenship Act. 

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma held an emergency meeting with his Cabinet colleagues in New Delhi today to discuss the prevailing situation in the state. Curfew was relaxed in the affected area of Shillong for 12 hours today.


The people of Chhattisgarh, specially the potential beneficiaries, welcomed the Citizenship Amendment Act recently passed by  Parliament. West Bengal, Kerala and Punjab have opposed the amendment.  West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee  and Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijyan said the amended Citizenship Act will not be implemented in their  states. Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh has termed it as a direct assault on India’s secular character and said his government will not allow the legislation to be implemented in the state.


The International Hockey Federation (FIH) unveiled a new world ranking system for 2020 in Lausanne, Switzerland today. It will come into effect from first of next month. For a better reflection of current performances, the new ranking will be match-based instead of tournament-based calculation. 

The FIH said, the new world ranking system has been launched after 12 months of research, analysis and testing. It cited numerous restrictions of the tournament-based system for the change. The world body governing hockey also said that the new model removes much of the subjectivity surrounding continental weighing by creating a system which is fair to all.


In Uttarakhand, normal life has been adversely affected following heavy snowfall and rain. Intense cold wave has gripped the hill-state. More from our correspondent --

"Due to heavy snowfall and rain in different parts of the state schools up to class 12 th will remain closed tomorrow. District Administration has ordered to close Anganbadi Kendra in Nainital , Pitthoragarh , Almora and some other parts due to bad weather. Many roads in hilly areas have been closed because of heavy snowfall. Secretary Utpal Kumar Singh reviewed the situation in all the districts through video conferencing. He has instructed the District Administration to take all necessary measures and arrangements in view of heavy snowfall and rain. Raghwesh Pandey, AIR NEWS, Dehradun.


Sensex at Bombay stock exchange settled 428 points up above 41,000 mark at 41,010. Nifty at National Stock Exchange also climbed 115 points to close above 12,000 level at 12,087.


The UK's Indian diaspora today hailed the impressive victory of Prime Minister Boris Johnson in the historic General Election. The  election marking Johnson's victory has set the UK to leave the European Union (EU) in the New Year.  Mr Johnson won the historic election as his Conservative Party crossed the 326-mark required for a majority in Parliament.
