Notification for ensuing Assembly elections in Delhi has been issued today. With its issuance, the process of nomination has begun. Candidates can file their nominations till 21st of this month and scrutiny will take place the next day. The last date of withdrawal of nomination will be 24th January. Polling to the 70-member Delhi Assembly will be held on the 8th of February and counting of votes will take place on the 11th.

Delhi High Court asked WhatsApp and Google to preserve and provide information related to the JNU violence to Police. The court also asked Police to seize at the earliest, phones of members of two WhatsApp groups on which the January 5 violence was allegedly coordinated. Justice Brijesh Sethi directed the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) administration to provide at the earliest the CCTV footage of the violence sought by Police. The court's observations came on the plea filed by three JNU Professors seeking directions to the Delhi Police Commissioner and Delhi Government.
On 5th of January, a mob of masked men stormed the campus and targeted students in three hostels. Three FIRs have been registered at Vasant Kunj (North) Police Station in connection with the incident.

A Delhi court deferred pronouncement of judgment in the case of alleged assault at a shelter home in Bihar's Muzaffarpur till 20th of January. The shelter home was run by former MLA Brajesh Thakur. Additional Sessions Judge Saurabh Kulshreshtha deferred the verdict as Thakur's lawyer filed a plea claiming that the prosecution witnesses in the case were not reliable.

The Delhi High Court dismissed the Enforcement Directorate's (ED) plea to set aside bail granted to businessman Ratul Puri in a money laundering case connected with the AgustaWestland VVIP chopper scam. Puri is the nephew of Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath. Justice Suresh Kait rejected the ED's plea, noting that four other accused in the case are already out on bail and Puri had been in custody for over 100 days.

India's flagship global conference on geopolitics and geo-economics, Raisina Dialogue will begin today. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the inaugural session titled, Navigating the Alpha Century. Seven former heads of state or government will share their views on important challenges facing the world. The fifth edition of the prestigious event is being jointly organized by Ministry of External Affairs and the Observer Research Foundation.
Our Correspondent reports that the participation of Iran Foreign Minister in the meeting assumes significance as it comes amid the stand off  between US and Iran. 

"The three-day conference will see participation of 12 Foreign Ministers, including from Russia, Iran, Australia, Maldives, South Africa, Denmark, Uzbekistan and the EU. This will bring together 700 international participants from over a 100 countries. In the short span of five years, the Raisina Dialogue has acquired an enviable global profile uniting the best strategic thinkers of the world. The synergies and collaborations in the dialogue represent India’s deliberative ethos, as well as its international credibility and convening power. It  has grown along with India’s diplomatic profile, and will set the tone for its intensive diplomatic engagement this year. Anand Chaturvedi, AIR News, Delhi."

India today signed an Memorandum of Understanding with Bangladesh for content exchange programme between All India Radio and Bangladesh Betar. An MoU between National Film Development Corporation, India and Film Development Corporation, Bangladesh, was also signed.
The MoUs were signed in the presence of Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar and Bangladesh Information Minister Muhammad H Mahmud in New Delhi. 
During the meeting, two Ministers also discussed the jointly produced film on the life and works of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Javadekar said, India and Bangladesh are organic friends and share great legacy. He said the MoU between All India Radio and Bangladesh Betar will give more dimension to content exchange between the two countries.

Health and Family Welfare Secretary Preeti Sudan has stressed the need of creating awareness among women at large about early detection of Breast Cancer. Speaking at a function in New Delhi today, she said, government is actively working on making diagnosis and treatment of cancer affordable. She said, screening of non-communicable diseases, including hypertension, diabetes and cancers of oral, breast and cervix is being done at 27 thousand health and wellness centres across the country. The Secretary said, government has approved 20 tertiary care centres in its bid to strengthening medical infrastructure for Non-Communicable Diseases, NCDs. Ms Sudan said, breast cancer is treatable and no women should die of it.

"So, what is important is that early detection and we have now a system of early detection with our health and wellness centers. I thing there is also needs for us to spread the message as to how to do self examination and how if there is any slightest lump or slightest inconvenience whatever symptoms, you must visit health facility. We must make people aware of it."

Michael Debabrata Patra has been appointed as Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The post was lying vacant after Viral V Acharya resigned from the post in June last year. He will be the fourth Deputy Governor of the RBI and has been appointed to the post for a period of three years.

The United States Senate is likely to begin the impeachment trial against President Donald Trump on 21st of January. This follows his impeachment by the House of Representatives last month for pressuring Ukraine to investigate a political rival.

In Jammu & Kashmir, five security forces personnel and as many civilians lost their lives in multiple avalanches during past 48 hours. The incidents occurred at different places in north Kashmir’s Kupwara and central Kashmir’s Ganderbal districts. Avalanches were triggered following heavy snowfall in higher reaches including areas along LoC in north Kashmir.
Security sources said, a heavy snow avalanche hit forward post along LoC in Machhil sector in frontier Kupwara district. Four personnel died after getting buried under the avalanche and several soldiers were rescued in the subsequent operation. The rescue operation is continuing in affected areas. In Nowgam sector of Kupwara district, a BSF jawan lost his life.
Meanwhile, five civilians died in yesterday’s snow avalanche in Gund Kullan of Central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district.
The Snow and Avalanche Study Establishment (SASE) has issued low-level avalanche warning till tomrrow evening for various areas including Leh.
Meanwhile, in Uttarakhand, cold wave conditions followed a fresh spell of snowfall at the higher reaches and rains in other parts of the state during last 24 hours.
Pithoragarh, Almora, Chamoli Uttarakashi, and Pouri Garhwal including state capital Dehradun witnessed rain last night. Roads are blocked following snowfall in hilly areas. Electricity supply has also been affected in some parts. Met Department predicts mainly clear to partly cloudy sky in the state today.  
Cold wave conditions also continued to prevail in the national capital. The city is expected to witness a partly cloudy day today.

Students, teachers and parents across India are eagerly awaiting for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s interaction programme "Pariksha Pe Charcha-2020". The event will be held at Talkatora Stadium in New Delhi on the 20th of this month. Mr. Modi will answer the questions and interact with students about how they can beat examination stress.
Talking to AIR News,Parijaat Sahu, a student of Kendriya Vidyalay from Pune said, this programme will encourage students to perform better in exams without stress.

"It's a golden opportunity for me to meet our honorable Prime Minister and to interact with him. I want to ask something about our Indian education system. Pariksha Pe Charcha programme encourages not to give up and bring out of examination stress."

P. Malsawmtluanga of Class 9 from Kendriya Vidyalaya, Aizawl said that he is very excited to participate in this year’s Pariksha Pe Charcha and hoped that this program will inspire his fellow students too.

"I am very excited and interested to be considered as one of the selected students to participate in the Pariksha Pe Charcha. I hope and expect to bring here the good results for educational activities from other platform and from different exposure moments."

In cricket, Put into bat, hosts India were 25 for 1 in 7.3 overs in the opening One-Day International match being played at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Earlier, Australia has won the toss and opted to bowl first. For India, both Shikhar Dhawan and KL Rahul made it to the playing eleven. Rising Australia batsman Marnus Labuschagne made his ODI debut. All India Radio is broadcasting live commentary alternatively in Hindi and English till the end of the match.

In the on-going Khelo India Youth Games in Guwahati, Maharashtra is leading the medal tally by virtue of the solid performance of athletes and gymnasts. Last year's champion team is leading the medal tally with 19 gold and 24 silver medals on the fifth day today. Haryana is following with 18 gold and an equal number of silvers. "Maharastra girl Aditee Ajit Dankekar won gold in rhythmic gymnastics in under 21 category.  Mumbai  girl Kirti Vijay Bhoite clinched gold in girls 200 meter race. In athletics, UP boy Vijay Kashyap who clinched  gold in under 17 boys hoped that he would continue to do well in major games.

"मुझे gold medal जीत कर बहुत अच्छा लगा और मैं बहुत आगे  अपने देश के लिए gold लाना चाहता हूँ ओलिंपिक मे."

Sneha Yadav from Maharashtra won silver in Hammer throw. On the other hand, Harayana girl Sneha got gold in 1500 meter race in under 17. UP boy Gaurav Kumar won title in artistic gymnastics and J&K's  Bavleen Kaur clinched the title in girls event. Rajasthan's Divyanshu Puri won gold in 81 kilogram judo. Makar Samkranti is being celebrated today in various parts of the country with religious fervor. This festival also comes as Thanksgiving to Mother Nature for an abundance of crops, well being and prosperity.
In Gujarat, Makar Sankranti is popularly known as Uttarayan and the main attraction is international kite festival. Union Home Minister and BJP President Amit Shah will celebrate the festival in his home town Ahmedabad. Our correspondent reports :

"The People of Ahmedabad are on the top of their houses since early this morning and enjoying kite flying. They are dancing with loud music and eating delicious traditional foods-along-with kite flying. Foreign guest are also enjoying traditional kite flying after completion of international kite festival. Good weather with normal wind has boosted the enthusiasm of youngsters. State Government and Voluntary organizations have launched help lines to save birds being injured through the strings of kite. Yogesh Pandya, AIR News, Ahmedabad"
