  • A nationwide programme to administer polio drops to 17 crore children launched on National Immunization Day today.

National Immunization Day is being observed today. President Ram Nath Kovind launched the Pulse Polio Programme for this year by administering polio drops to children below five years of age at Rashtrapati Bhavan yesterday. Under this programme, over 17 crore children of less than five years across the country will be administered polio drops. Polio booths have been set up across all states which will remain open from 9 AM to 4 PM today. The programme is part of immunization drive of the Central Government to sustain polio eradication from the country.


Joining in with the rest of the country, Nagaland is launching the Intensive Pulse Polio Immunization today. Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio in a tweet urged all parents who have children below 5 years of age to ensure that their children receive polio drops. More from our correspondent:

"Nagaland joined the rest of the states across the country administering the two drops of polio today. State Department of Health and Family Welfare has set a target of reaching 2,77, 283 children in the age group from 0-5 years. Special focus is also being given to the migrant population with an aim to prevent importation of polio cases. Deputy Commissioner Kohima Thejawelie Gregory administered the first two polio drops to a three year old girl child at Naga Hospital Authority Kohima, marking the launch of National Immunization Day. Meanwhile, health care providers and volunteers would be conducting house to house visit in the next two to three days for those eligible children who have missed their doses today. On the second day of the public outreach programme in Jammu and Kashmir today, nine Union Ministers are visiting different blocks of Jammu division to meet people on the ground and to seek their feedback on various developmental initiatives and schemes. The ministers will also inaugurate several developmental projects besides listening to public grievances. We have this report :

"Smriti Irani, Mahendra Nath Pandey, V Muralidharan, Anurag  Thakur, Piyush Goyal and R K Singh reached Jammu today. Whilst Dr Jitendra Singh, Arjun Ram Meghwal, Ashwani Chaubey  have been campaigning in Jammu since yesterday. After reaching Jammu, the ministers headed to Katra, Panthal, Dhansal, Basoli, Dilabar, Nagrota, Udhampur, Akhnoor, Jagwal and Chilari blocks. But through out the day, they will inaugrate several developmental projects and will interact with local people. This is being seen as a big move to push development in Jammu and Kashmir and further strengthen the democracy at grass root level with active people's participation. Naseer Rather, AIR News, Jammu."

Speaking at an event Women and Child Development Minister Mrs Smirit Irani said,

"कश्मीर का उज्ज्वल भविष् मात्र केवल स्कूलों तक सीमित नहीं रहेगा। प्रधानमंत्री जी के आशीर्वाद से उनकी पहल पर जम्मू कश्मीर में पहली बार आईआईटी और आईआईएम बनाने की वायद शुरू हुई और ये हकीकत जम्मू कश्मीर के लिए बनेगी।"

Meanwhile, pre-paid mobile connections were restored in Jammu and Kashmir yesterday and 2G services resumed in two districts of the Kashmir valley. J&K Official Spokesperson Rohit Kansal said that Voice and SMS facilities were restored for all local pre-paid mobile phones across the Union Territory.  


Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has said that the Citizenship Amendment Act has been brought only to give citizenship to certain persecuted sections. Addressing a seminar on the subject organised by the Chennai Citizens Forum in the city, she said even in the past people from certain neighbouring countries who had migrated to India have been given citizenship after making similar amendments. She stressed that the present amendment does not deprive citizenship from any of the people of India.


The nomination process for the Delhi assembly election has entered the last leg as only two days are left for filing of the nomination papers. So far, a total of 152 candidates have filed nomination papers from different assembly constituencies. Scrutiny will take place on Wednesday. The last date of withdrawal of nominations is 24th of this month. Our Correspondent reports that political activities are gaining momentum in the city. A report:

"After BJP and Aam Aadmi Party, Congress also released its list of 54 candidates yesterday for the Assembly elections. BJP has declared names of 57 candidate so far, while ruling Aam Aadmi Party has announced the candidates for all 70 seats. The election is likely to witness triangular contest involving, Aam Aadmi Party, BJP and the Congress. There are around one crore 47 lakh voters in Delhi who will decide the political fate of the candidates on the 8th of next month. The counting of votes will take place on 11th of February. In the last assembly elections, Aam Aadmi Party had won 67 seats, BJP grabbed three seats while Congress had failed to win a single seat. Dipendra Kumar, AIR, New Delhi."


In view of the Republic Day celebrations and the upcoming assembly elections, Delhi Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik held meetings with senior officers and emphasised on anti-terror measures, crime prevention and security arrangements in the national capital. Mr Patnaik directed personnel to be utmost and take preventive action keeping in view anti-terror measures like tenant verification, border checking, security of vital installations, malls and markets and patrolling in heavy foot fall areas. Delhi Police Commissioner emphasised on the need for impartial and professional conduct of all ranks of police personnel and action against illicit liquor and fire arms.


Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s interaction programme 'Pariksha Pe Charcha-2020 will be held tomorrow at 11 AM. The event will be held at Talkatora Stadium in the National Capital. Over two thousand students, parents and teachers will be participating from all over the country. Mr Modi will answer questions and interact with selected students about how they can beat examination stress. Students, teachers and parents are eagerly waiting for this programme. Our correspondent spoke with some students from Delhi. 

In January last year, during the 'Pariksha Pe Charcha' programme, the Prime Minister had talked about better use of technology by children in their lives.

Cold wave conditions continue to sweep North India. The National Capital Delhi today recorded a minimum temperature of 7 degrees Celsius, a notch below normal. The maximum temperature is expected to hover around 17 degrees Celsius. The weatherman has forecast a mainly clear sky and shallow fog later in the day. The MET Department said, the city may receive light rain on Tuesday due to fresh western disturbance.

In Uttarakhand, many high altitude areas are covered with snow. Road connectivity, water and electric supply along with telephone networks are affected in remote areas.

In Himachal Pradesh, Shimla received light snowfall while some parts of the state received light rain.

In the Kashmir Valley and Ladakh, sub-zero minimum temperatures led to frost formation on roads, causing inconvenience to motorists.

In most parts of Punjab and Haryana a thick blanket of fog reduced visibility in the morning at a few places.

In Rajasthan, cold weather conditions continued with Ganganagar being the coldest place in the state at 3.7 degrees Celsius.


The four day 50th World Economic Forum at Davos in Switzerland will begin on Tuesday. 53 heads of state government from 117 countries are participating in the event. The theme of this year's WEF is 'Stakeholders for a Cohesive and Sustainable World'.

Union Minister for Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal will lead the Indian delegation. Mr. Goyal will hold bilateral meetings with the Ministers of Australia, South Africa, Russia and other countries. Apart from this, he will also hold bilateral meetings with CEOs of companies and will also attend conferences for Accelerating Investments in Indian Railways and attracting Global Institutional Investments in India.

Maharashtra continues to dominate the medals tally winning 52 Gold medals so far. Maharashtra girls won gold in Kho Kho under 17 category defeating Delhi.

A total of 30 gold medals are at stake today. Kho Kho, Lawn Bowls, Boxing, Wrestling, Swimming, Football matches are on at different venues. More from our correspondent :


"Assam players won 5 gold ,1 silver and 2 bronze medals in Lawn Bowls event so far. The event has been included for the first time in Khelo India Youth Games. Adinita Kakati who won 2 medals said, all the players worked very hard during the last three months and they have got the dividend.

West Bengal, Bihar and Jharkhand also won one gold each in Lawn Bowls while two medals to be decided later. Another Assam boy Sanzio Pandey gave credit to team coach and manager for their success.

Meanwhile, medal matches will be beginning soon in swimming and wrestling. In Football, Assam enter into the final in boys under 17 category. With Shashank, Manas Pratim Sarma, AIR News, Guwahati."


In cricket, Australia were 41 for 1 in 8 overs in the third and final One-Day International in Bengaluru till the last reports came in.

Earlier, Australia won the toss and decided to bat. The three-match series is currently locked at 1-1 after India outclassed Australia by 36 runs in the second ODI at Rajkot. India had lost the first ODI in Mumbai by 10-wicket.

Australia have replaced Kane Richardson with Josh Hazlewood.


In the 7th edition of Mumbai marathon today, 22-year-old Ethiopian national, Derrara Hurisa, broke the event record for the full marathon elite category. He finished the marathon in just 2 hours 8 minutes and 9 seconds and emerged the winner.

Fifty five thousand runners including foreign nationals participated in the Marathon which began amidst chilly morning.


US President Donald Trump's legal team has issued its first formal response to the impeachment charges against him, describing them as a dangerous attack on democracy. In their brief document they said that the impeachment articles failed to allege any crime and were a brazen attempt to interfere with the 2020 presidential elections.
