India and Portugal today signed 14  agreements to boost cooperation in a range of areas including defence, investment, transport, ports, culture, industrial and intellectual property rights and yoga. The agreements were signed after extensive talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa in New Delhi today. Spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs Raveesh Kumar said, Mr Modi and Mr de Sousa had meaningful discussions covering the broad canvas of India-Portugal partnership by leveraging complementary strengths across sectors.


President Ram Nath Kovind met the visiting President later in the evening and hosted a banquet in his honour.


In his statement, President Ram Nath Kovind said that the economic ties between India and Portugal are on the rise and bilateral trade has crossed a billion dollars.


"Our bilateral economic ties are on the rise. In our discussions today, President Marcelo and I were happy to note that our bilateral trade has crossed a billion dollars. Two way investments are also rising. We agree to harness the full potential of bilateral engagement in sectors like infrastructure, blue economy, renewable energy, water and waste management, IT, Tourism and hospitality."


Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa extended support to India's permanent membership in the United Nations Security Council.


"There is support and also the Portuguese support for you, belonging as permanent member of the Security Council of the United Nations. Its a kind of recognition of your role in the world. The fact that you are a key country for the balance of power in the world."

The Nation is remembering the martyrs of the Pulwama attack who made the supreme sacrifice in a dastardly terrorist attack last year. Forty Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel were martyred when their convoy on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway was attacked by a vehicle-borne suicide bomber at Lethpora in Pulwama last year. President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the nation in paying homage to the martyrs.


The President said in a tweet that a grateful nation salutes the supreme sacrifice of the brave soldiers. He said, India remains firm in its resolve to defeat and eliminate terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. The Prime Minister said, that the martyred soldiers were exceptional individuals who devoted their lives to serving and protecting the nation. He added that India will never forget their martyrdom.


The Defence Minister and the Home Minister also paid homage to the martyrs of the Pulwama attack.


In Pulwama, a memorial to the 40 CRPF personnel was inaugurated at Lethpora camp today. The names of all the 40 personnel along with their pictures are part of the memorial along with the motto of CRPF 'Seva and Nishtha' that is Service and Loyalty.

In Jammu and Kashmir, one civilian was killed and three injured in ceasefire violation by Pakistan Army in Shahpur Qasba and Kirni sector of Poonch District. The Indian Army said Pakistan resorted to heavy mortar shelling and firing along the Line of Control on civilian areas and Indian forward posts. Indian Army retaliated befittingly.

The Supreme Court today dismissed Nirbhaya gang rape and murder case convict Vinay Sharma's plea challenging the rejection of his mercy petition by the President. One of the four death row convicts in the 2012 rape and murder case, Sharma had alleged in his plea that his mercy petition was dealt in a "mala fide" manner.


A bench of Justices R Banumathi, Ashok Bhushan and A S Bopanna said no ground of judicial review of the rejection of the mercy petition is made out by Sharma.


The top court rejected the contention of Sharma that he is mentally ill and said his medical report suggests he is stable.


The trial court had on January 31 stayed the execution of the four convicts, including Vinay Sharma, in the case, till further orders.

The Supreme Court today issued notice to Rashtriya Janata Dal Chief Lalu Prasad Yadav on a plea challenging the bail granted by the Jharkhand High Court in one of the fodder-scam cases.


A bench, headed by Chief Justice of India S A Bobde, sought a response from Yadav on the plea filed by CBI.

The Department of telecom has asked telcos to clear 1.4 lakh crore rupees dues by midnight tonight as Supreme Court takes strong note of non-compliance of its order. The Department of telecom, DoT has withdrawn its order that asked for no coercive action against telecom companies defaulting on statutory dues payment.


The order also directed field offices to take immediate necessary action in compliance with the October judgment of the Supreme Court. The direction by the DoT said its previous order dated 23rd January stands withdrawn with immediate effect.


The Department of Telecommunications has also ordered firms such as Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea to clear the dues before midnight tonight. The DoT, which faced the ire of the Supreme Court for putting on hold recovery of dues from telecom companies, started issuing circle or zone-wise demand notices to firms.


Earlier today, Supreme Court directed the Managing Directors and Directors of telcos and other firms to explain why contempt action should not be taken against them for non-compliance of its Order. The order was to pay adjusted gross revenue (AGR) of 1.47 lakh crore rupees to the Department of Telecommunications, DoT.


Taking strong note of the non-compliance of its Order, a bench of Justice Arun Mishra, Justice S Abdul Nazeer and Justice M R Shah expressed anguish over the order passed by the DoT's Desk Officer staying the effect of its verdict in AGR matter.


Meanwhile, market benchmarks Sensex and Nifty dropped by almost half a percentage point today as banking shares tumbled after the apex Court took a strong note of non-compliance of its order asking telcos to pay statutory dues.


"The 30-share BSE Sensex fell by 202 points to end at 41,258, with 22 of its constituents closing with losses. The broader NSE Nifty shed 61 points or 0.5 per cent to settle at 12,114. In the wider market, the BSE Mid-Cap index slipped 0.80 per cent while the BSE Small-Cap index lost 0.4 per cent. The rupee settles 6 paise lower at 71 rupees 37 paise against the US dollar today.  Gold prices rose today by 75  rupees to 41,481 rupees per 10 grams in Delhi. Brent crude oil was trading at 57 dollar 25 cent. Arjun Chowdhury for AIR News."

The Election Commission will implement the directions of the Supreme Court concerning criminal antecedents of candidates by reiterating its existing instructions with suitable modifications. The Commission said, in a press release issued in New Delhi today, it  whole-heartedly welcomes the landmark order, which is bound to go a long way in setting new moral yardsticks for overall betterment of electoral democracy.

The Union Government has cleared investments of over 540 crore rupees in some stuck residential properties that will benefit 1,800 home buyers.


In a tweet, the Finance Ministry said, a preliminary clearance has also been given for due diligence to 14 projects with capital commitment of 2,500 crore rupees that will provide relief to 10 thousand home buyers.

Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Hardeep Singh Puri today handed over Conveyance deed on personal land to 34 people under the centre's flagship scheme Pradhan Mantri Unauthorized Colonies in Delhi Awas Adhikar Yojna, PM-UDAY, in New Delhi.


Briefing media after distribution of deeds, the Minister said, nearly 151 conveyance deeds have been issued so far.

The Employees’ State Insurance Corporation, ESIC has enhanced  the confinement expenses from five thousand to seven thousand 500 rupees for pregnant women who are not able to avail of maternity services of the ESIC dispensaries. The decision was taken by ESIC during a meeting held yesterday in New Delhi under the Chairmanship of Labour and Employment Minister Santosh Kumar Gangwar.

Health Secretary Preeti Sudan today reviewed the preparedness for prevention and management of the Novel Coronavirus of various states with concerned ministries. Ms Sudan informed that various precautionary measures have been undertaken in close coordination with the concerned ministries at the central level. She added that the situation is under control in the country and is being regularly monitored by the Prime Minister’s Office, the Health Ministry and the Cabinet Secretary on a regular basis.

In China, the official death toll from the Novel Corona virus outbreak in Hubei province rose by 121 today, bringing the total death toll to nearly 1,500. Hubei's Provincial Health Commission today said that nearly 5,000 new confirmed cases reported yesterday.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit his Parliamentary Constituency Varanasi on Sunday. During the visit, Mr Modi will participate in the Closing Ceremony of the Centenary Celebrations of Shri Jagadguru Vishwaradhya Gurukul. He will release the translated version of the Shri Siddhant Shikhamani Granth in 19 languages and its mobile app.


The Prime Minister will dedicate the Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya Memorial Centre to the nation and will unveil the 63-feet Statue of Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya. This is the largest statue of the leader in the country. A local resident, Dr K N Pandey said, the younger generation of the country should take inspiration from Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya and contribute in nation building.
