  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurates first-ever Khelo India University Games at Cuttack through video conferencing; Hails it saying it is the start of next chapter in sports in India.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared open the first-ever Khelo India University Games at Cuttack in Odisha this evening. With this inauguration, India joined the league of nations where University Games are organised. As many as 3,400 athletes from 159 universities across the country will vie for top honours across 17 disciplines, including rugby which is among the six team events.

 Launching the multi-disciplinary sporting event through video conferencing, the Prime Minister said it marks the next step in country's sporting revolution. He said This was not only a historic moment in Indian sports but also a big step for the future of Indian sports.

"इस अभियान के तहत जो प्रतिभा ऊपर रही है वह बड़े-बड़े शहर की, बड़े-बड़े इंस्टीट्यूट की नहीं है। छोटे-छोटे शहरों के बच्चे हैं, गरीब घरों के टीयर-2, टीयर-3 शहरों के सामान् परिवार से आने वाले बच्चों ने आज कमाल कर के दिखाया है। देश के लिए नई आशा पैदा की है। ये जो टेलेंट है, कभी संसाधनों के अभाव में exposer के अभाव में आगे बढ़ने का उनको मौका नहीं मिलता था। अभी इस टेलेंट को संसाधन भी मिल रहे हैं और कम उम्र में ही राष्ट्रीय स्तर का यह exposer भी मिल रहा है।"

 Speaking on the occasion, Union Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju said, India's dream to become a super power in sports will become reality.

"इंडिया में आज तक जो स्पोर्ट इवेंट बेस् इवेंट माना जाता है। क्योंकि यह सबके मदद से संभव हुआ है। में उम्मीद करता हू भविष् में हम सब मिलकर के प्रधानमंत्री नरेन्द्र मोदी जी का भारत को एक स्पोर्टस क्षेत्र में सुपर पावर बनाने का जो सपना है, उसे पूरा करने में हम सब एक जुट होकर के काम करेंगे तो हमार सपना पूरा होगा।"

Chief Minister of Odisha, Navin Patnaik thanked the Prime Minister for giving this opportunity to the state.


Indian flight carrying medical supplies and relief material for Wuhan is still awaiting clearance from China. India submitted its request well in advance for a scheduled flight on the 20th of february. The flight carrying relief supplies to China will also bring back the remaining Indian nationals from Wuhan. Even though the Chinese side continues to maintain there is no delay but inexplicably the clearance has not been given even after 2 days of scheduled flight.

Meanwhile, Indian nationals in Wuhan continue their long wait for the flight which will evacuate them to India. Relief and evacuation flights from other countries are still going on, including by Japan, Ukraine and France.


Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Gauba today held  a high level meeting to review the status, actions taken and preparedness of States and Union Territories regarding management of Novel Coronavirus, COVID19. After a detailed review, in addition to the universal screening as per earlier advisories, universal screening at airports is now being planned for flights from Kathmandu, Indonesia, Vietnam and Malaysia. In furtherance to the travel advisory issued earlier, citizens are advised to avoid all non-essential travel to Singapore.


The World Health Organisation Director General said the window to contain the spread of novel coronavirus is narrowing fast. As hot spots emerge round the globe, including in South Korea and Iran, there has been trouble finding the first patient who sparked each new cluster. More than 26 countries and territories around the world are fighting with the epidemic which has caused more than 2300 deaths and has infected around 76000 people.


 A Delhi court today dismissed a plea by one of the four death row convicts in the Nirbhaya gang rape and murder case claiming he has mental illness and needs treatment.

Additional Session Judge Dharmender Rana rejected the plea by convict Vinay Kumar Sharma.

The plea had claimed that Sharma had sustained grievous head injury and fracture in his right arm, and was suffering from "insanity", "mental illness" and "schizophrenia".

 Tihar jail authorities had termed his claims as a "bundle of distorted facts" and told the court that CCTV footage established that the convict had inflicted "superficial" injuries on himself and was not suffering from any psychological disorder.


A road which was closed for over two months in Shaheen Bagh due to anti-CAA protest, was opened by a group of demonstrators today. It was however immediately closed. According to Delhi police officials, road number 9 in Shaheen Bagh was reopened by a group of protesters, but later it was closed by another group. The protesters have opened a small portion of a road leading to Kalindi Kunj so that locals can pass through it with their two wheelers.


Puducherry is paired with Daman and Diu under the Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat Campaign.

"Though Puducherry is a small union territory it is a very good example for Ek Bharart Shreshtha Bharat. The first reason is that it is an attractive tourist place where more foreign tourists visited throughout the year not only with in India but also from many foreign countries. Terrorism related incidents have shown a considerable decline and the number of active terrorists in Kashmir has come down to less than 250. This was disclosed by Director General, J&K Police Dilbagh Singh while briefing media persons in Srinagar today.

The Police Chief said the number of infiltrated terrorists during the last two months is only three; and more than 40 Over Ground Workers involved in either promoting or supporting terror activities have been arrested so far.


Now moving on to the US President's visit to India:

US President Donald Trump's upcoming maiden visit to India is expected to boost ties between the two countries with several senior Members of the President’s Cabinet accompanying him as part of the delegation. President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump will be leading the high level 12-member delegation to Ahmedabad, Agra and New Delhi beginning Monday.

"A galaxy of top US officials will be part of the high-level delegation accompanying President Trump during his visit to India. The two countries are looking at signing about five pacts providing for cooperation in different areas. Boosting counter-terror cooperation, deepening engagement in the Indo-Pacific region, augmenting defence and trade ties and India's concerns over H1B visas are expected to figure prominently in the delegation level talks. Senior advisors to the US President Stephen Miller, Dan Scavino, Chief of Staff to the First Lady Lindsay Reynolds, Assistant to the President and Special Representative for International Telecommunication Policy Robert Blair are among the other members of the delegation. US Ambassador to India Ken Juster will be traveling with the visiting delegation. Suparna Saikia, AIR News, Delhi."


The visit of US President Donald Trump has become a topic of household discussion in the city of Ahmedabad. People from all over the country have come to the city to see President Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi share a stage once again at the 'Namaste Trump' event after a grand 22 kilometer roadshow.

Now we move on to our special segment Har Ek Kaam Desh Ke Naam.

In Telangana, several projects have been developed under the Shyama Prasad Mukherji Rurban Mission ever since the Prime Minister launched the programme four years ago. Central Lighting System and Road Widening projects in Chirrakunta of Kumuram Bheem-Asifabad district of the State attracted national attention for its completion in less than two years and for its public interest.

Local people and public representatives of Chirrakunta, a block headquarters in Asifabad district of Telangana are happy as they got Central Lighting System besides getting widened roads in their tribal cluster with the intervention of Syama Prasad Mukherji Rurban Mission. Over 1.5 crore rupees have been spent on this project under the SPMRM. As per the local people, the crime rate came down and their business investments have gone up due to the project. Before the identification of Chirrakunta Rurban Cluster, the blaock headquarters had bad roads and poor lighting arrangement in the small town. As a result, the local market used to get closed by sunset. Many accidents and crimes used to occur. After getting Central Lighting System and widened roads under the SPMRM, now the local markets are kept open till 10 PM which boosts the local business. Lakshmi, airnews, Hyderabad.


On day 5 of the Asian Wrestling Championship in New Delhi , India earned three silver medals today. In the first Gold medal match, Satywart Kadian lost  to Iranian Mojtaba Mohammadshafie Goleij in the 97 kg category to settle for a silver. Gourav Baliyan lost his Gold Merdal match to Arsalan Budazhapov of Kyrgykzstan in the 79 kg and has to be satisfied with silver. India's star wrestler Bajrang Punia also had to settle for a silver medal as he  faced a crushing 2-10 defeat at the hands of Japan's Takuto Otoguro.The other Indian in action at the Gold Medal matche today will be  Ravi Dahiya in 57 kg.


In cricket, the West Indies defeated gallant debutant Thailand by seven wickets in the 2nd match of Group B at the women's Twenty20 World Cup in Perth today. The 2016 champions, West Indies restricted Thailand to a modest 78 for nine off their 20 overs and chased down the total with 20 deliveries to spare. Thailand is the lowest ranked team in the tournament.
